You'll need enough money to tide you over until he gets paid. The major expense is going to be accommodation (most likely a month's deposit plus a month in advance). I'd actually recommend having enough to cover your living costs for at least a few months, just in case there's a delay in gettig paid. So work out how much that is likely to be and how much you need to save over the next few months. If you might only be staying for 6 months, you'll probably be best off renting a room, as flat contracts are usually for 5 years, with a min stay of 1 year.
