You may be angry but by law I think it should be an opt-in option by law. Like how tick the box for the terms and conditions. That way people who want it get it and who dont dont. It saves all problems. I only found out I was paying my mobile after that time due to it showing up on my accounts.
If I didnt check my accounts I would have been paying it for months without knowing. I doubt they would have sent a letter to you if you hadn't used any of your bundle at all.
So one side you have the upset people who get disconnected and the other you have people who are unknowingly paying for something they are not using.
An opt-in option solves all this.
E.g. Do you agree that at the end of the minimum period this contact, you will continue to be charged untill you give 30 days notice.
In addition to all the mobile companies, Insurance companies - car and house - require you to cancel renewal otherwise you are automatically renewed. They do notify you, though at renewal time whereas mobile companies do not.
Equally, Gas, Electric and Land line contracts roll over unless you do something and in many of the services supplied to businesses a similar arrangement exists - only they often demand 90 days notice otherwise you are locked in for another year.
The point I am making is that in my experience many service contracts today will roll over unless you cancel within the t&c and, given that my house and car are two of my biggest potential losses, on balance I think I would prefer the safety net in case for, whatever reason, I overlooked their renewal.0 -

When your contract finished in December and yet you were still able to use your phone for calls/texting did you not wonder why you were still able to?0

It's 18 months minimum, not 18 months and stopped... With o2 your renewal date and upgrade options are on their website with your account details...0

4 your rights to terminate this Contract
terminating your Contract after the Minimum Term
4.1 You may terminate your Contract to expire at any time after the Minimum Term by giving us at least one month's notice. You are free to restore your Contract throughout this notice period, should you change your mind.0
