The Apple iPad

LOL, they charge $49 for a crappy $5 keyboard, too. And $30 for a cable to be able to connect up your displayport-only mac to a standard projector. But the fanboys just love handing over their money at the altar of Jobs.$130 extra for a $5 3G chip? Apple really are a bunch of money-grabbing !!!!!!.
Jobs is being more than a little disingenuous here. Lets go through his list of complaints about netbooks:
1. Slow processor. So yes, you put a freaking cell-phone processor in your device instead. One that can't even handle multitasking.
2.Low quality displays. The ipad has a 1990s-style 4:3 aspect ratio, making it virtually unusable for watching any kind of modern movie or TV content, unless you want to have huge black bars taking up half of the screen. Even online video sites like youtube are widescreen. Oh wait, the iPad can't even handle flash, can it
3.PC Software. Yes, netbook users get a huge range of software to choose from, and get to decide what they do and don't install on their device. I have killer apps like Word, Photoshop, and yes, games, which all run smoothly on my netbook. I also have the choice to run ubuntu or even (with some trickery) OSX if I want.
WhereasiPad users are locked into a proprietary embedded kiddy-OS which won't let them do anything in case they hurt themselves, and only get to choose from a handful of pre-approved novelty toys from the appstore, which seems to consist mainly of iFart applications. Try doing anything useful on that iPad.poppy100 -
It simply can't compete with the Kindle as an eBook reader - it's not even close. Without the e-Ink screen's readability it's DOAsweetstudent wrote: »I think that yes it is going after the eBook market taking on Amazon, Sony and Barnes and Noblepoppy100 -
This version doesn't - though no doubt they'll be an upgrade (for $$$$) that will allow it sometime in the futureBillScarab wrote: »Do we know for definate this won't do multi-tasking? It has a faster processor than the iPhone so may be able to, or is it actually a restriction of the OS?
But no doubt that will also require you to buy the 2nd generation version that has a camera and that can handle Flash.
When will the Macolytes ever learn never to buy the 1st generation of any Apple product0 -
LOL, he seems to have taken it upon himself to personally argue with each and every comment that could possible be seen as critical of his beloved Apple.MartyJ - You are sounding more than a bit repetitive.
He's just trying to get us all prepared for the glories of the Macbook Wheel :rotfl:poppy100 -
I'll wait then for the next generation of netbooks that can do something useful at half the price - and which don't have batteries designed to last a day longer than the guaranteeA 500 MHz A9 renders webpages as fast as a 1.6 GHz Atom, it can playback HD video better than Atom, it can run 3D games better than Atom, and it can do all this while using less power than an Atom processor.0 -
I'll be very interested to see how it sells. I think if I was going to buy a kindle I'd probably change my mind and get an iPad because it will have that facility plus the attributes of a laptop.
Except it doesn't have that facility. The main thing that makes ereaders reasonable book 'replacements' is the epaper screen. It's much more comfortable for intensive reading than a backlit display. I'm not saying I wouldn't buy one of these (I'm undecided), but if I did, I wouldn't use it for reading ebooks. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.
In every town, in every state. In every house and every gate.
Wth every precious smile you make. And every act of kindness.

Well surely when the battery in the iPad fails you can just buy another one and replace it.... oh waitalanrowell wrote: »and which don't have batteries designed to last a day longer than the guarantee

Jobs was really excited about being able to change the background screen image. Bleeding edge technology, or what?0

I suppose you have to clutch at straws when the world's looking at what is essentially a lacklustre device.0 -
Oh, I thought that was going to be an optional upgrade, like something as simple as copy/paste on the iPhone, which every other competitor had had for the last five freaking years.NickMidgley wrote: »Jobs was really excited about being able to change the background screen image.
