Alarm goes at 8 am, but we lie there listening to the Today programme until the room is warm.

We have been hopeless since back from DS' in Florida. Chatting on the phone last night put me well back into US time, so wide away at 2 am, then fast asleep at 9 this morning.

  • :TGood for you Miro - I too have the best pillows, mattress and duvet. I have a mattress topper too. What I use in winter are flannel sheets from Northern Nights on QVC - the ultimate in luxury - sublime - they are warm when you get into them and sleep is instant. There are many delicious ways to enjoy retirement and a dreamy bed and late awakenings are top of the list. If my phone goes too early I just ignore it. :D

Working days - alarm at 6.45 out of the house by 7.20. Hellish in the winter though I know I'm lucky to be able to lie in bed that long with so many people with jobs starting at 8am or even earlier (relative on the buses gets up at 4.30!!!) or with long commutes.

Non-working - I like to have 1 lie-in to 10-11 am every week. It might be wasting a couple of hours but I feel I need and deserve it. On longer holidays it settles at about 8.30 so I guess when I retire that's when I'll get up. It'll be worth adjusting to a pension rather than a salary just for the pleasure of looking at the clock, seeing it's 7 am and TURNING OVER AND GOING BACK TO SLEEP!

Best explanation I've ever found regarding sleep habits during the winter relates to badgers - When I found it I was howling with laughter as all you would have to do is supplement the word 'retiree' for 'badger' - and then tell yourself you are following nature's cycle.

"Whilst badgers do not hibernate in the winter, they do become slower and less active. This usually starts from November and lasts until the early spring. This is known as winter "torpor" and is really characterized by having a few sleepy days and lazy nights, as opposed to a recognised hibernation. During this period, badgers will emerge only to use their latrines and get the minimum of food, bedding, scent marking and territorial patrolling."

  • I usually wake up when the affects of the 15 tablets I take at night wear off

this reminds me of the number of times i have seen nurses in hospital wake patients up to take their sleeping pills-)

OH and I both woke early this morning as it had gone so cold!

15tog duvet, with a double up throw on my side, flannel pjs, the hot water bottle, in its fabulous red fluffy cover, was still warm for my feet. Got up early - well 8.25 - then a cosy read of the papers in front of the fire ( with heating still on)

  • I'm usually up and about around 6.00 - 6.30 am. Usually stooge around in my dressing gown for a couple of hours before having a shower and getting dressed. If having granddaughter for the day, then have to be up and out by 7.00 am to meet up with son close to motorway junction. My OH took early retirement so has no need to rush also. Happy days!

I'm nowhere near retirement age and get up for work at 4.30am, 6 days a week.
Thats why i'm so delighted to be just starting a weeks holiday! I've decided that I shan't get up until at least 9am everyday.:j
