I know it sounds morbid but have you completed a death search?
No Matter what you do there will be critics.

for a death search try the IGI - you know, the Mormon site. they may not have recent deaths though but the upside is if he did emigrate the site is international. and its free and fairly easy to use. type IGI into search engine and you should find it easily.
I am not sure whether there are still such things as emigration registers - try direct.gov to see if they still exist and are searchable.
if i think of anything else will post back - good luck!

Anything distinctive about his name or is it a fairly commonplace one? (Not asking you to tell me!!) Does he have a middle name? This can make attempting certain searches more worthwhile.

hun - did he have any family? mum, dad, siblings? if you have his birth cert it may be easier to do a search for his parents or search for siblings who may well know where he is now.

No, his Dad's Mother was unmarried, when she had him in 1944, and then she died in about 1948. No siblings. cousins and Aunts/Uncles, but no one has heard of him.

    Thanks everyone. xx

I doubt IGI will have anything so recent for deaths, you would need to be looking at the official (GRO) civil registration records which cover all births, deaths and marriages. This direct.gov link looks like a useful starting point and has a link to where, near you, you can view the GRO indexes for births, deaths and marriages.

You can search the death register up to 2005 on Ancestry, also the marriage register. A lot of it is trial and error/

As an example, I just searched my mum's death. She had quite a commonplace name, lets say as commonplace as "Ann Thomas" (not her name obviously). I put in her exact year of birth, but no death location. For date of death I put in 1990 +/- 10 years. Surprisingly only 7 results were thrown up and she was amongst them.

It's a time-consuming process of trial and error, I ask about a less common name because obviously that makes things easier. Not a solution but maybe an idea to play around with and can lead to more info from locak newspaper obituaries etc.

Anyway, enough of that...... hopefully he's still with us!!

    PS
I don't have loads of time, but if you want me to do a quick initial search of the Death Register on Ancestry, do pm me. There may be too many results to deal with, but you never know!!

  • I did as you said, for IGI and did not get anywhere really ? Maybe we are not doing something the right way ?

    Thanks anyway.
