Looking for someone after 40 years ? Help?

My husband is looking for his Father and we are using as many sites as possible.
A friend mentioned that she had read on this site that a child of someone who had served a Prison sentence could ask for the relevant information, as a last known address ? Something about asking at a Police Station ?
Does anyone remember which Post this was on ?
Thanks

Sorry, can't help with that specific post, but have you considered the Salvation Army Tracing Service?

As Bronnie suggests the salvation army can help trace people.
Also if he's been in the army or similar i think the ex servicemans services can assist too.0 -
Thanks to you both for answering - I should have said we used the Salvation Army when we first started looking 6 years ago, and they could not find him.
We thought that if THEY could not find him he must have emigrated or something, so stopped looking for a while.

I expect you've tried Message Boards on sites like Ancestry and Genes Reunited, local area message boards and local newspapers? Does he have a less common name? Marrriages and Deaths Registers? Do you know of any brothers or sisters?0
-
Yes, we are on GR, Ancestry with a family member.
We have his Birth Cert. Marriage Cert (to my Husbands Mother.) and we are just about to start the process of applying for the Divorce Cert.
He was born to a single Mother in 1944, she died when he was 4, and he was then brought up by his Grandmother/was in an Orphanage too .
Trouble is there is no contact with my husbands Mother now, as she would NOT approve of him looking.

So it's a case of ...he was last heard of by the family at age say 20-something in 1970 in 'such a place' and nothing since?0
-
Well, he was last heard of in 1968/70'ish, in London and yes, no contact since.
The Copy of the Divorce Cert might give us his last known address.

The divorce cert would also give you last known date of "contact".
Have you tried googling "his name" in quotes?
Things you might need to eliminate are:
1. Any sign of another marriage after the date of divorce?
2. if you can find no other contact adate, work through the death registers to eliminate that possibilty.
Check these on St Catherine Index/ the register of BMD which is often held by main libraries or familiy history sections at archive services. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
You could try sites which have the electoral roll like www.192.com -useful if your fil's name wasn't that common. They cost a few pounds to do a search. Not everyone's name is on it now since they introduced the option to opt out of having your details made public on the electoral roll but the records go back I think to 2002 when most adults were listed.0

Thanks for that, we did join 192.com (though you need to think about how the Credits are used up - we goofed and used a lot for nothing ! ! ) and have written to 6 people with the same names and the right ages around England. Posted them today, and just crossing our fingers for some replies now. (we encoloed s.a.e's )
I am grateful for all your replies, I am still hoping to find out about the Right to Information as the child of an ex-Prisoner ????
