they're just normal fillings. they don't hurt anymore than the old ones. I believe there's something in the "black fillings" that you shouldn't have in your body.

I believe the 'black fillings' are made of some kind of metal, and the 'white fillings' are made of amalgam... hopefully someone will be along shortly to explain further.

  • From what I remember from my last trip to the Dentist, the white filling is generally used for smaller fillings as it's not quite as strong, but is also less noticeable.

There's nothing wrong with black (amalgam) fillings. White ones are prettier, but I beliive not as good over a large surface.

Are you an NHS or private patient? Generally, NHS will only pay for white fillings for the front teeth and then amalgam for the back.

    I have to pay £60...
  • Hi I had a white filling recent. I was given a white filling on the NHS cos I am pregnant and the other type itsn't safe while pregnant I believe. You can not see where the filling is - it is great. Normally I think you have to pay more for white ones but I would pay for them every time now because you can't see them in your mouth. It hurts no more than usual fillings.

    If that's for 2 then you've got a good price-the last one I had was about £42

Are needles involved by any chance on this or the old dentist drill?

Outlaw, when I've had it done, the dentist has given me an injection in my gum which I've hardly felt, followed by using a drill to remove the decayed/damaged part of the tooth.
I can honestly say I've never felt any pain whatsoever, if that's what you're worried about :)
