we've got both, laminate is great cos you can wash it and sweep but it can be noisy. carpet is nice and cosy. i have to say that i have gone back to carpet, much nicer to have warm, cosy feet in all this cold weather we are having!

Hi, I have laminate and a dog and I love it - so easy to keep clean, but "everyone to their own"

I don't think carpets and pets (or kids) would be a good combination as what happens if the pet is sick - that would just be gross with a carpet as it would get embedded in the pile. With laminate you just get out a mop & bucket and it's clean again.

Also carpets will make things a lot easier for fleas as the eggs and larvee can get into the pile and lie dormant for some time.

We have laminate-OH thinks it's great but I hate it, it doesn't feel homely to me. As soon as we can afford it I'm going to try and convince OH that we should have a carpet.

We have got stairs coming off of our hallway and they will remain carpet, have any of you had issues with the areas that are joined to a different floor?

Also any recommendations for hardwearing laminate would be great:)

After trawling t'net I found this good quality laminate for the price! I buy tons of it.

I used these guys at http://www.flooringsupplies.co.uk/ when I had the flooring done in my flat about 5 years ago and they seemed good value. I got a Kahrs "engineered" flooring which is only slightly more than laminates but is a lot nicer as it's wood instead of a "wood effect" pattern.

Laminate the stuff you love to hate, we have it in our lounge & hall and it looks fine where it meets the stairs. i hate it its cold underfoot and i think it makes my lounge feel quite sterile and i have to brush it over everyday, but i wouldnt change it for anything. we had it down 10 years and it looks a good as it did when laid. With 3 kids and a JRT from a puppy its paid for itself as i would have gone thru at least 3 carpets with my clumsy lot
  • I have laminate and I find it really annoying!! 1 dog (Retriever, 12 yrs), 2 boys (12 & 2). The dogs constant clitter, clatter with his paws drives me mad, he's having problems getting off the stairs where the carpet meets the laminate. He's always skidded a bit but his age means he's skidding a lot. His hairs just blow around like tumble weed and although you can't see them..... you know they're there, lol. Instead of a quick daily whizz with the hoover, it turns into a pulling out of furniture whizz to make sure you've got them all.
My toddler is always slipping on it, so he has to have his socks taken off or shoes left on. Every small mark shows on it, so I follow the dog and kids around with a mop and then any drop of water turns it into a skating rink. Any dropped glasses etc spreads a long way so that means sweeping, hoovering and mopping just to make sure!! Toys dropped and mega blocks being tipped out makes a big load of noise. Apart from all that, it's fine, lol.
It's a vote for carpet, dyson, carpet small stain cleaner and a pro carpet cleaner twice a year, from here, lol. :0)
