Laminate or Carpet?

We have got a new build property and the carpet that was originally installed (cream) is looking very tatty and not the best quality (not fitted by us), we are looking to replace it and do the whole of the downstairs (it is all open plan, front room, dining room and hallway). We wanted to go for wood but it is out of our price range and so it is down to laminate or carpet.....which is the longer lasting? we have dogs but they have been used to laminate before and we would put rugs and runners down to save their joints, we also have young children.
Any opinions would be great:)

I've had both and I would go for the laminate every time, carpet especially with dogs and young children just gets too dirty and worn.. I find the laminate just easier to clean than carpet and it just doesn't looks so worn as carpet once it starts to age... JMO....#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

I would personally go for laminate flooring as that is what im used to , and ive had dogs in the past and I also have a toddler now

Reason being it is a lot easier to clean up mess and spills which you get with children and pets . And als ofor that reason I reckon laminate will last longer in teh long run .
Good luck whatever you decide

We had laminate fitted when we first moved in and I now hate it, but we can't afford to replace.
Our dog slips on it all the time and now he is 9 years old, he's starting to injure himself when he falls awkwardly. It didn't seem to affect him when he was younger. Just last week he jumped off the settee and landed badly and couldn't move for about 5 minutes, it was really frightening.
I'd rather have carpet and have it cleaned twice a year than this stuff. Agree that it's hardwearing though.Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.0 -
We have got stairs coming off of our hallway and they will remain carpet, have any of you had issues with the areas that are joined to a different floor?
Also any recommendations for hardwearing laminate would be great:)0 -
Has anyone used Ikea or Carpetright for their laminate?0
