Mum booked for us to go to New York 23/11/12 to 27/11/2012:D

We've never been before and are trying to work out how much we'll need to budget for food and attractions. On our European trips we usually have breakfast skip lunch and have a main meal in the evening and will probably do the same in NY. Just wondering how much all you NY experts out there budget per day?
The fact we're arriving on Black Friday may also need to be taken into account for our shopping budget if my friends are to be believed....:rotfl:
  • Hope I'm posting this in the right place. Currently searching for flights to NYC on 6/12 and returning a week later 13/12. Cheapest I can find is just over £400 with Delta. Is it worth paying an extra £50 or so to go with Virgin Atlantic or another airline you might recommend?

Also, are there ever deals with airlines or is that highly unlikely seeing as I'm going in December? Will prices shoot up if I leave it until November? And if so, how much?

I know that might seem like a vague question but any help is appreciated!

Will I be ok using a UK photocard driving licence as ID in NYC? Usually carry my passport but going out of manhattan a few times so would prefer not having to carry it around with me all the time..
  • Yes photo licence will be fine .............. Leave the passport in the hotel safe.

College (or university) football while not that popular in the New York City area is HUGE in other parts of the country. But if you want some atmosphere of what an American sporting event is like, Columbia play at home to Dartmouth on Saturday 20 October.

You wont need to buy tix in advance - it never sells out.And tix will only cost like $15 each or so. Getting to their stadium is very easy. Take the Number 1 subway "UPTOWN" (towards West 242nd Street - Van Cortlandt Park) to station West 215th street - walk 3 streets north to West 218th St and turn left - the stadium is 5 minute walk. Quite a picturesque location overlooking the Hudson River.

Getting a Giants ticket is VERY HARD and VERY EXPENSIVE.

If you are lucky, the baseball team New York Yankees may just be starting in the World Series (baseball championship) - again tix will be INCREDIBLY EXPENSIVE - just find a good sports bar and enjoy the atmosphere !!

Also it is possible basketball and hockey (Knicks and Rangers) may have some pre-season games on at that time at Madison Square Garden.

Hi - looking for some guidence if you dont mind!

We are looking to go to NYC on 18th October for 4 nights - would a budget of $300 per night inc. taxes be sufficient for a hotel 'in the thick of it'??

Could anyone throw in any suggestions??

Also - I am really keen to take in a sporting event - not overly bothered by the type of sport. I believe the Giants are playing at home on the Sunday - would I realistically have a chance of getting tickets??

    Cheers in advance.

Those prices seem to be quite good - check what type of plane Delta are using - if it's a 757, its a narrow body (3 seats - aisle - 3 seats). Some folks prefer to fly a wide body - I am sure Virgin will use a 747 or A330 widebody.

On other hand, the smaller 757 will mean potentially shorter queues at immigration.

Food can be cheap. I do the same occasionally, you probably need to look at $10 for breakfast, and around $30 - $40 for a reasonably priced evening meal. The price of the evening meal, does not include any alcohol.

The fact that black friday is involved, doesn't affect your shopping budget, as you're only allowed to bring back £390 worth of goods tax free.

Delta are just as good if not better than Virgin, Free beers, same baggage allowance, 1" more legroom in Economy over Virgin and BA. So to pay £50 for a lower quality service isn't sensible according to me.

Delta fly three wide body aircrafts a day from London.

Yes you will. I've used mine all the time.
  • Im flying to NY mid sept then spending a few days travelling upto vermont then coming back down to spend another 4 days in NY.

My question is what clothes would be most suitable?
Is it going to be jumper weather or would t shirts be better?

Also, regarding shopping etc, how much can you bring back?

Is it better to take one of those cash cards with you or travellers cheques?
    Thanks
