So i'm guessing flights in august are going to cost around £8-900 then? A far cry from 2009 when I got £300 return :(

I got 2 flights with virgin and a 4 star hotel, for 4 nights, for £1500 for 2 of us in aug

I wouldn't give up on the flights just yet, Virgin seem to be having sale after sale this year, they should have a biggie around easter time and hopefully you will get some august prices in there.

  • Hi guys,

I'm off to New York in 3 days and I'm freaking out about how to get around Manhattan

Due to budgets, we've ending up staying in Jersey so I know that'll add at least 30 minutes on the journey.

The place we are staying is near Journal Square so we can get the PATH either to WTC or 33rd Street and then we can can get the subway from there.

What is the easiest and cheapest way to pay for that journey for the week? In and around Manhattan I guess we should get a Metrocard?

Any information, advice and costs would be great.

Also, we are flying in and out of Newark - what's the best way to get to Jersey from there?

    Thank you in advance

Its easy to get to Jersey from Newark - take a train heading to NY Penn, get off at the first stop which is Newark Penn and the PATH train is across the platform which will take you to Journal Square. It'll cost you $10 each all together.
I don't know if there is a PATH pass available (I stayed in Jersey for a few days 5 years ago) but its only $1.75 per journey. Then get a metrocard if you're going to do a few subway journeys a day. Its $29 for a week.
If you go to the World Trade Center on the PATH beware of all the building work restricting the streets around it. I went last month and had to make a huge detour to get to my hotel which was visible from the station. Head right as you exit the station and its much easier to get to the other subway stations.

A quick heads up that the new Yotel in NYC is now taking bookings ahead of its June '11 opening.

Could be an interesting development for the budget-minded traveller to the US although that depends how long their $149 introductory rate lasts.

This deal is now featuring on Travelzoo.

    It's even described as a " Times Square " hotel !
