If you fly Aer Lingus via DUB is it correct that you clear imigration (is this different to the security bit?) during the transfer at Dublin? We were looking at flying from Birmingham next time - flights looked nice and cheap too (about £250 each for flights during the the June half term) the other week too.

You do clear immigration at Dublin if you have a morning flight, afternoon flights don't get the immigration in Dublin or Shannon afaik

Thinking of planning a surprise Honeymoon to NY.- He knows about wedding on dec 30th its the destination that will be a surprise!
It's somewhere we've both wanted to go, we would like to it without children as look forward to trying nightlife, sports etc.
Have found direct flights 31/12 to 5/1 2011/12 for £1100 ish with continental (1.5% on quidco)
Beacon hotel seems fine for £750 ish via octopus (9% back here)

No food at hotel but hope the hotel is close to plenty of places.

How does this sound? what to do with transfers?

we are after exploring the place rather then a glamourous relaxing do.

whats the chances of seeing a basketball or nfl game?

Know nothing about New york at all so stab in the dark!

    Any info appreciated.

I bet if you waited and flew on the 2nd or 3rd January, you'd get it much cheaper. You won't enjoy New Years Eve, because of possible jet lag, and that's why flights are probably a little more expensive. Also, hotel prices drop a bit in January, so $200 a night is rather steep, when you could get the same hotel (which is a good choice btw), or a better hotel for less money

Don't worry yourself with things "close to the hotel". The New York City Subway takes you everywhere and anywhere, and you have over 20,000 restaurants at your disposal. Even if the hotel did have a restaurant, I'd probably say, why are you thinking of eating there? it isn't a good restaurant, just overpriced. All in all, you will have good food, you will have good cheap food, or you will have good expensive food, it's just a case of what you actually want to eat. Choose ANYTHING, there will be a restaurant that serves it.

Have you read my getting into and around manhattan post? Click page 1 , and it is linked off there.

Have MetroCard for the Subway, will travel. Manhattan itself is 14 miles long and 3 miles wide, I've still not explored it all, so just have fun... oh, and then you'll want to go back.. ;)

NFL Tickets are 100% season ticket holders, your better chance of seeing an NFL Game is the once a year game they do at Wembley, I go each year! If you really want, you have to wait for at least the dates to be released, this season isn't even over yet (it is on Sunday), and take a chance with stubhub

Basketball is easier probably, but again, the current season isn't even finished.

I think i've given you a starter for 10, and something to muse over. Specific questions are always better than vague requests for information.

You'll pay through the nose for a hotel anywhere in the city on New Year's Eve- Really it's a case of if you are see the New year In type people who would feel it was worth the expense to see the ball drop in Times Square along with a crowd of thousands -or not. It's similar to London, lots and lots of people and dang cold.

If it is worth it to you book the hotel for NYE now -you'll have trouble later .......if it's not that important then you could book a hotel somewhere near Heathrow that has NYE celebrations (NOT an airport hotel which will be souless but somewhere like Windsor or Egham so a short journey the next day to the airport) and fly out the next day.

TBH after my wedding I enjoyed getting away and it just been the two of us and I wouldn't have appreciated a mob scene event like Times Square is -but we're all different. It's about what is right for the two of you !

Oh and pack walking shoes-the New York sales will be on !! :D
I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

    MSE Florida wedding .....no problem

    .

Im glad youve informed him about the wedding. Nothing worse than turning up in jeans and a hoodie for your own wedding.
We all know about MSE and stuff but to have a mid xmas wedding then over to NYCity for NYEve is special we have to agree . If it wasnt their honeymoon i would say wait till early jan. But if you can afford the extra do it, i would avoid times square though and hit a decent bar in a great area with good music and nice people. You might not see in the new year

Many thanks for the help. Dates quite fixed as need to be back in work for 9th Jan- no leeway as teachers.

Not big on NYE so a locals bar is more our thing.

May have another think as it seems thst most of you think its the wrong time to go. - He thinks we're reenacting The Trip- around the north of England and maybe this is more suitable as money is mainly spent on food and drink and hotels rather than 1000k + on flights

    Thinking hat on

Thing is, you're probably not going to make it past 10pm on New Years Eve, if you flew out that day. So fly out to NYC on the 1st Jan, come back to the UK on the 6th Jan, so the plane lands on the 7th, and you've got 2 days to recover, 1 day in work, and it's the weekend. It still works.

Now, flights on that date are currently showing at £427 each, so your 2 flights are below £900.

Also, if you're more of a "locals bar" kinda person, then you really should stay in an area where there are "local bars". I've had a look on QuikBook and there are hardly any hotels that are available, mainly because it is only Feb 2011, and hotels have no released their availability for Jan 2012.

Yup. I did one trip MAN - DUB - JFK, and it's not bad at all, Since that trip I've just not found them cheaper than Delta, or Delta via LHR, sometimes I don't mind the extra travelling.

I'm not addicted to IFE, and don't see the obsession with it, so I can't comment, I rarely use it, as I always have music with me.

Thanks for that. Good to hear they're not too bad as Aer Lingus do look like they might be a good option for us.

Had previously been looking at AA but the direct flights from Manchester are on a 757 which has an 3 - 3 seat configuration...I could get over having no seat back TV etc as it's more a convenient way to pass a bit of time than an essential to be honest, but the single aisle planes and having to sit in the middle of my 6'2" husband and a stranger does not make for a pleasant flight IMO! The only other option with AA is changing at Heathrow which means we should be able to get on one of the 777's they fly to to JFK, much nicer, but I hate Heathrow, especially since we'd have to get across from T5 to wherever AA fly out from...T3?

I don't really care who we fly with, but the likes of Delta & Continental are not coming up with any decent prices for September as far as I can see, and as for the non-US carriers i.e BA or Virgin, forget it. We want to fly back from Chicago rather than a straightforward Manchester - NYC return which I think is probably restricting our choices somewhat.

With the Aer Lingus flight though, I'm a bit confused over the immigration issue so hoping you can clarify. I had assumed you were talking about clearing immigration at Dublin on the return trip, but have just seen someone on another post here saying you clear US immigration there...that makes no sense as you're not in the US, but perhaps I'm missing something?! Any ideas?
