Sorry, I didnt know where to put this but as everyone talks about credit files here, i put the question here
My local council searched my credit file. Are they allowed to do this without consent? I only found out by randomly browsing my credit file and noticing my search
Why would they do this without my consent?

What type of search was it? An ID verification or a FULL search, the latter being highly unlikely.
If you pay council tax they're fully entitled to look at your crdit file.0 -

I'm not sure thats entirely accurate. There was some noise last year about council tax debts/arrears being recorded on your credit file but I'm fairly sure that didnt materialise and that would have been the only 'excuse' your council would have had to look at your credit file.
So I'd check this out if I were you. I thought anyone or any body, Corporate or Government, needed your permission before they look at your file or do a search of any description.

It said unrecorded enquiry but they have no reason to search it. I too thought that they had to get your permission before doing so.
I have given them any reasons too search my file. I have never (in any circumstances) been late for payments or been in arrears!
If anything, I have overpaid on serveral ocassions so I really do not understand'Sometimes you just need to keep your mouth shut':j0 -

Hello Cocopops, well, unrecorded enquiry means that any other parties searching your file would not see the Councils enquiry but that isn't the point is it?
I'm going to check mine now, God help them if they have been sniffing round my file. They are usually too busy hanging around my bins..."If you are going through Hell, keep going" - Winston Churchill0 -

lol,
exactly, that isnt the point, my concern is, they can just search my file without my permission, which is worrying. Not that I have anything to hide or my credit file will show anything different from what they already know, but what happened to confidentiality and permission?
I will be giving them a ring but I am ready for the excuse of 'I dont know what you're talking about''Sometimes you just need to keep your mouth shut':j0 -
I have just been fined £ 2,500 because they found a newspaper in my bin!"If you are going through Hell, keep going" - Winston Churchill0
