aPhRo, people like you shouldn't be allowed near any catering business.
December is far and away the busiest month of the year for restaurants so you give yourself a day off without giving any notice? I'd have called you more than a F ing T..t if I'd been your boss.
And virtually nobody gets double time in catering. Some places might give a day in lieu for Bank Holidays but that's about it.
And you are a right P R I C K !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -
the clue is in his name coop divi...................0

I think most of Tobey's staff are foriegn. We should insist they only employ British.0

Aphro, you should report the branch if staff don't get breaks.0

I'm guessing you work alone in the catering trade?
Anybody with an ounce of common sense and employee's would know these things happen.. always tends to be when you least need it however people will occasionally need time off to sort things out or if they are ill, although this poster mentioned going to A+E i would hope anybody in the catering trade that was ill (for whatever reason) would be taking the day off, assuming the catering is preparing food for other people to consume anything other than recovering at home away from food preparation would be disgusting and unhygenic.0 -
Whats nationality got to do with anything?
The OP didnt mention anthing about nationality in the original post!
The problem is simply this:
The staff are poorly paid, and are badly treated by their managers and the company they work for.
The managers are treated even worse by people higher up in the chain of command.
These companies tend to be unable to get reallly good staff, because of the poor pay, and the way employees are treated.
When they do manage to get decent, hardworking, capable people to take their rubbish jobs, they DO NO STAY, because of the poor pay and poor working conditions.
Upper management have scant regard for their staff, and often repay loyal staff by getting more and more demanding, and treating them even worse. Then they really dont know why staff leave.
I managed a unit in a chain (not Toby) for 13 years. I had the lowest staff turnover in the my region (although the low pay meant this was still high), because I respected my staff. I looked out for their interests (although pay was one thing I could do nothing about), and they in turn looked after me.
I had some really good staff who took the jobs because we were in a high area of unemployment, but I also had to, on occasion take staff who were really the dregs of society, bacause on that occasion they were the least poor of a really bad bunch!
Upper management refused to budge an inch on the pay, and didnt really care where I got the staff from, or how poor they were. In their eyes that was my problem, and mine alone.
Shortstaffed? Do it yourself! Which I had to, frequently.
The place was open 24 hours! On one occasion I started work at 9am on Friday morning, and was on the rota due to finish at 5pm. One of the evening staff rang in sick (genuine), so I had to stay till 11pm (16hrs). Then the person doing the night shift failed to turn up, so I asked if I could close. Answer was no. So I had to stay until 9am (24hrs). At 9am the person who was ill the night before rang to say they were still ill. So I was stuck there for a further 8 hours.
By the way, two of these shifts were lone working (the 9-5 and the night shift).
That made a 32 hour shift for me, most of it alone!
Many staff who moved on to better things, did and still do keep in touch, even though I no longer work there.
Some of these people moved on 10 years or more ago, yet I still get regular texts!
The point is I as a manager was badly treated, the staff no matter how good, were badly treated, poor staff stay, and good staff are off at the first available oppurtunity.
Poor pay and incredibly victoian working conditions, means that these companies can sell their 'offering' at a bargain basement price. Their whole ethos is cheap and nasty. Not just to staff but they will have the same scant regard for customers.
The perception from the customers point of view is Value For Money.
Maybe we need to ask, at what price?
Foreign, British, Pink with Yellow spots on is irrelevent. These places get poor staff because they deserve them!0 -

Yes, I apologise. These poor British workers are being exploited by the foriegn managers. It is amazing that they can walk into our country, get beneftis and are made managers to be PC.0 -
