Best way to handle it would have been to call her over with a £10 note in your hand, tell her this was your tip and you just lost it. Then walk out.Barclaycard 3800

You really do get what you pay for, and you have to remember that. If you want good service then don't go to a Toby. I have been to a Toby on many occasions and I go with very low expectations. The food is usually ok - sometimes not. The service is always awful, and the other customers are often not exactly conservative voters if you know what I mean.
Having said that, I do feel for your experience. It is very foolish of any company to treat complaints badly.
No, I don't.
What do you mean?0 -

You were paying next to nothing and seem to expect some sort of premium service.
the amount charged is part of a special offer they have on sometimes, which they obviously do to bring in more customers
the standard carvery is £5, basically you get the dessert free
whatever they decide to charge for a special offer shouldnt affect what they pay the staff at that period in time, & the staff dont then have the right to offer a lower/worse level of service

your a troll
no one expects 'premium service', just a standard decent level of service. what the OP has experienced is actually worse than no service

I wouldn't expect premium personal department store type service, but politeness should come included at any price point.
Even Ryanair don't charge for an assistance to say, "Thank you"0 -
Sounds like an all to familiar story, not just with pubs but all types of business. Weak leadership all the way up the chain means eventually the staff start to think the business is run for their benefit, not that of the customers, and begin to treat customers as an inconvenience.
Mind you M&B are too busy fighting at the board level to bother about customer service right now.0 -

Sorry to bring up an old topic but i have more to add.
Unfortunately, at least i know from experience. Toby's are horrible to work at, particularly back of house, i get £5.20/hr which isn't too bad, but it's pretty low considering how hard everyone, particularly in the kitchen is expected to work, you know we don't even get double time on the busiest days of the year or bank holidays?
I'm not going to mention which particular Toby i work in (i plan on resigning tommorow in fact) but the way staff are managed is horrendous.
My latest problem with the management being, I've recently been going in and out of hospital with ongoing investigations to my heart and i had to go into a and e on the morning i was due to start a 10 hour shift (usually i do 12 hours, oh and we don't get breaks btw). I managed to get a quick chance to call work, where i explained to my manager the situation, to which he replied over the phone "You're a f#!$i*g T*4T." slamming the phone down... (excuse the implied language)
An unacceptable way to handle the situation in my opinion, i felt pretty guilty I had to let the team down, but what was I supposed to do? Put my self in danger in a kitchen after collapsing, surely that's a bit negligent? I figured he might have seen me in the car that morning, heading home after visiting a friend, and then assuming that I was lying, although the episode occurred later on in the morning with my shift due to start at 12.30.
EDIT: Had to remove some stuff ... After I've resigned i certainly won't be a customer of that particular Toby or any for that matter.
All of the posts and comments I've seen so far i could've applied to the Toby i work in, it was weird how familiar they seem.
I think the problem is down to incredibly poor yet overpaid management. Who need to get down off their high horse and do some real management work instead of expecting incredibly hard work by their staff, EDIT: removal of more stuff.... I know we don't exactly have a job market where i can pick and choose jobs but for a student part time, there is no need for me to be subject to such harsh working conditions.
If anything in the post get's noticed by someone from M&B or someone wanting to use the information, i won't disclose details of where this is happening. but i would imagine if you walk into any Toby something similar is probably happening. And M&B are just raking in blood money from this brand.

aPhRo, people like you shouldn't be allowed near any catering business.
December is far and away the busiest month of the year for restaurants so you give yourself a day off without giving any notice? I'd have called you more than a F ing T..t if I'd been your boss.
And virtually nobody gets double time in catering. Some places might give a day in lieu for Bank Holidays but that's about it.0 -

A tad harsh as they said they had to go to A&E not just decided they felt a bit under the weather.
I assume from your comments people in the catering business aren't allowed to fall ill or anything like that in December?? And to be fair if my boss spoke to me the way you said you would then they'd need a few days off after being taken to A&E!!!If At First You Don't Succeed, Call It Version 1.00
