*flutterby* wrote:Hi All,
My partner and I are off to New York for 10 days in September, we have eventually booked to stay at the Amsterdam Court and now we're trying to fill our days with what to see and do and would be VERY greatful for any suggestions...
Any trips etc to take?
Should we book trips before we go or are they cheaper when we get there?
Places to eat etc...?
I have never really been on a 'holiday' before so am very excited and we want to get in as much as possible, I really want to go to Niagra falls too, anyone any opinions on this?
All comments will be hugely appreciated, thanks in advance
as it seems like your first time i would at least fly one way to buffalo or rochester and hire a car with one way rental back to NYC. i would drive back via the catskill mountains ( via corning ) rather than the thruway route 90 (as there's not much to see ). with the time you've got though a cheap return flight may be preferable as it is a 'days' driving from the falls to nyc0 -

Thanks

Hi Richard,
We got a great deal with the flights as we booked when BA had the sale on... Mcr to JFK £378 for us both return inc all taxes etc....
As I mentioned we are staying at Amsterdam Court, for 9 nights, think it came to £1200, we looked and looked but I am too fussy so we had to pay this in the end
Hope this helps0 -

I'm also going for a week in September and although never been before, I'm not too bothered about the usual sights. I have however been doing a bit of research and am planning on the following (amongst other things):-
http://www.accomplicenewyork.com/
an eating tour with this guy http://www.famousfatdave.com/
would have sorted this http://www.flyush.com/ (helicopter from JFK to downtown Manhatten) but the timing's not right for us
https://www.siferry.com
check http://www.edlevineeats.com/ for good food spots
also tried getting tickets for some tv shows but not getting much response so if anyone can help?0 -
For 'nervous' first timers in New York this Big Apple Greeter service is FREE and quite good.
I have never used them but they get good reviews.0 -

I am also going to NYC in September. I have booked at trip to Niagara for the day too.
Go to Jetblue (https://www.jetblue.com) and select to go from JFK to Buffalo. It will cost around $59 to $69 (depends on demand) + taxes to fly each way. Then I am hiring a car at Buffalo for the day to go to the Niagara area (cost £25 all inclusive). Jetblue are a no-frills airline but are very good and allow you to pick the seats when booking. Their seat pitch is 34" at the back of the plane.
If you are in NYC for a few days, get a New York Pass (https://www.newyorkpass.com), they have 15% off the 3 day and 7 day passes at the moment. If you do get one, you can go to Planet Hollywood and get $10 off any merchandise or food every day before 6pm. You end up with a tee-shirt for everyday of your visit in NYC.
The pass gives you access to most of the main tourist attractions - Empire State, Statue of Liberty, Rockerfeller Centre, UN Building, boat trips etc
To get around on the subways and buses and you are there for a few days, get a Metro card which costs $24 for 7 days. All are air-conditioned and quite safe to use.
Hope this helps.0 -

Your link to Newyork pass needs editing, it has a ')' too many.
Have you used one of these?
Mind you it looks very expensive $96 for 3 days! If you could only cram in all the attractions it may be worth it0 -
also check out flights to rochester if you are going with the day trip + car idea ...rochester is less than an hour away. spend 2 days and take in toronto (whistle-stop) as welll0
