I can afford to pay it all off when I need to but is it better to let them think you may finance it? I don't know how it works now, there was a day when paying cash would always get you a better deal, but now I'm not so sure. It's like the guys in electronics shops trying to get you to pay by finance because it means more money to the company in the long run and a bonus to the seller.

New polo is popular and in demand so dont expect to get much discount unless you are a cash buyer with no part ex.

Servicing will be every year on time and distance, or you could have it on long life, but only worth it if you do 15K plus a year. VW have a servicing offer on the polo - £250 for 3 years servicing - 3 services including a brake fluid change - if it was me I would take that as its a good buy.

You also need to factor in the colour you want - red, white, blue non metalic are standard, but all the other colours are £405 extra.

When asking for extras dont forget that the first years tax is already included in the price of the car so dont be fooled into thinking they are "giving" it to you!

Ok thanks. I didn't realise tax was always included for the first year. That's good to know.

The salesman said the black was now standard price also. So that's the one I will be going for, unless I'm mistaken and he said that about the Golf. Confused as I was looking at both to start with.

What else does servicing include? Your saying it's definitely worth the extra £250 for 3 years.

Thank you everyone. This is all really helpful.

Nice. I'm going to get on that later and print it out to take to the dealer.

No sorry plane_boy you were right. Extra £405 for black. No charge on the Golf. Mental that they can charge an extra 405 just for black. I thought that was a pretty standard colour!

Don't expect much more if you get him down to that price.

Why a Polo? VW's reliability is not as good as it once was.

Take a look at the Honda JAZZ and it is made in the UK

Ask for finance deal, and you can negotiate the interest rate charged aswell. Then ask what the cash price would be

See which one works best for you, with your money in the bank earning a pittance.

Drop the full tank of fuel in at the last minute to close the deal.

Don't forget you don't have to pay their deposit, if they ask for something silly like £1K - 2K say your not happy at that level and suggest £500 (or whatever you are comfortable with) You never know what might happen in the future and you wont want to worry about a large deposit.

I'd also say, don't be afraid to walk away if you're not getting anywhere on the haggling front.
I once had one dealership offering me a £200 discount on the list price - I drove < 10 miles down the road to the next dealership and within half an hour and not much effort, I had about £1500 off. That was MG though, albeit a while before they went under.
