  • I would not I am not allowed to give out information at work due to the Data Protection Act so why should I breach this for a Debt Collection Agency.

I am not advocating people not paying their debts, but I am totally against the use of bailiffs! As I mentioned earlier, we have had problems with bailiffs in the past and we were not doing a runner anywhere! Unless you have had personal experience with bailiffs after you I have to say how can you know just how bad and frightening it is? Bailiffs are not just used against those who "have done a runner", they are used against people in serious financial difficulties who just don't know where to turn. We are now almost debt-free after many years of problems which we wouldn't be if the bailiffs had added their extortionate fees on top.

I have no problem with court action to recover debts but bailiffs are not on, applying for an attachment of earnings/benefit is the way to go (and more certain) and I stand by what I said.

By the way, excessive "shouting" (use of capitals) is considered bad form.

I did not say everyone does a runner. The 'scum' () that i refer to deserve to have as much inconvienence as possible at their door and believe me, that includes bailiffs. Please don't feel sorry for these people because they don't deserve any favours. They have 'stung' a lot of people and that is only the people that i know of. They just DON'T CARE. In my case, i wish i could have just 'simply' applied for an attatchment of earnings etc but these people are very devious-apparantly not working anymore! (and yes, this is a lie), closing down the business but restarting under a new name (several times). I have run out of options to recover my money and yes, it does look like they are going to get away with conning my family. So please don't tell me that bailiffs were a bad decision after what these people have done.
Saetana, if someone had conned you and your family out of several thousands of pounds and you were advised by a solicitor that you would have a chance of recovering your money by using a bailiff, are you really telling me that this could not possibly be an option for you? -- I'm sorry, but i don't believe that. You said yourself that you have had first hand experience of bailiffs so you would know that this would be a good option for you.

:TI stand by my views regarding bailiffs and i think that anyone that has been in my family's position would be the same.:T

 This has nothing to do with work. This is about people paying what they owe.
  • Most folks would mark the mail "Return to Sender" but who knows what Royal Mail do with such items? They "lose" literally millions of items of post every year. Maybe they just incinerate mail instead of returning it.

I don't recall saying that you had said "everyone" does a runner, all I said was "not everyone does a runner". Bailiffs are used against many people, not just those who have behaved as badly as the people in your case. Given that it is not always possible to differentiate between people in genuine financial difficulties and those who are completely trying to avoid payment I do not agree with bailiffs being used for anyone at all. To me it is verging on criminal (the bailiffs' behaviour), which under other circumstances could result in a prison sentence.

Did you know that you can apply for attachment of benefits as well as earnings if your debtors are saying they are not working?

By the way, I stand by my principles and I would NOT use bailiffs against anyone under any circumstances.

  • Yes I would and have done so. I own a property that I let out and the previous tennants had put the water bill in my name at the beginning of the year although they were responsible for it. They also didn't pay on time and left a dusbin's worth of cigarette buts on the front lawn and heaps of used cat litter under the washing machine. On the other hand I forwarded to them various children's toys, DVDs and a diamond ring that I found behind the fridge and kitchen cupboards. so it works both ways.

where did you get this highly specific statistic from???

returned mail is returned, but it usually takes longer as the contract is to deliver it in the first place as quckly as poss, once this has been fulfilled, they are not required to return to sender as quickly. they prioritise the first and second class post, hence why it can take a while to get returned mail sent back.

she wasn't saying it was about work, merely pointing out that to give out someone's personal details to a third party without their permission is a breach of data protection, and is at the least amoral, and at worst, possibly an offence.

This highly specific statistic stuck in my mind in 2004 when Postwatch got upset that Royal Mail was losing 14.4 million items a year. Royal Mail said this was out of a total of 21 billion items so they were pretty relaxed about it. Since then, figures have been hard to find. Hands up all those who think Royal Mail will have improved since then.

Here we go - another do-gooder. Worried about upsetting the debtor. We really all should be looking after them shouldn't we? What about the people who are owed the money eh???

If you ever get 'stung' i think you will have a different attitude.:(
