    I have always taken the it's "The Circle of Life" view and have never hid the children from death.

    Just tell them straight and maybe bury him as a family.
  • would it help them if you said gran was looking after the guinea pig now?

    As it would happen your suggestion did help. the topic came up quite uneventfully as we were feeding our fish.
    explained to DD that not all pets live forever, heaven with gran etc got to the point, tears etc. Then she hit me with it :

    " so now can I get a hamster please mummy?":eek:

    can't go through this again when the time comes for the hamster to go.
    Now I know its my fear though, not hers!

    I miss my Guinea pig:(
