I'll join you there, same circumstances with my son. Bad bad mummies.

Although the local HV's run a weaning session at 4 months and actually confirmed it is OK to do this in the right circumstances, contrary to the 'any food before 6 months is terrible' view.

My now teenagers were part of the wean at 4 months generation - seem fine on it???? they were also breast fed until well over 1 year old and added in a bit of cows milk from 6/12 here and there. Forget the iron ... they were both profoundly anaemic after birth and given iron drops for about 3 months but nowt after 4 months of age..

None of which I disagree with, it';s just that by trotting out the manufacturer's line that it is 'the closest to breastmilk' you collude with them in deceiving women that it is any way as good as breastmilk. Ultimately, it may be 'the closest formulated milk' but it still ain't close by a long chalk.

    But we digress.

There was a prog on tonight about kids' food and follow-on milks - basically it said follow-on milks are unnecessary. THink it was Panorama.

I am watching it on iPlayer now and they are talking about the Toddler Milk (1yr) not the 6month follow on milk.

Me too! I started weaning J at 4 and a half months - he wasn't content on milk, was really miserable and always hungry despite feeding him every 2hrs.

The DoH state you should BF exclusively for 6 months (I [STRIKE]didn't [/STRIKE] couldn't do this) and they even acknowledge that some babies do need to be weaned earlier which is why they set the minimum of 17weeks.

They are covering weaning today at our local baby grouyp and most are around 4-5months old.

Thanks to everyone for your opinions. I have decided to try the Hipp Organic Milk first and see how it goes from there!

Such codswallop though isn't it? How do people cope in countries where mums have to chew the babies food?

Out of interest, is that a common thing -the Mum chewing babies food?

We did Baby Led Weaning, and LO has always fed himself, and has no problem with meat, apples, cereal - anything really.

As someone very interested in anthropology... yes it's pretty common :) remember that apples, bananas and lots of things available to us isn't to a lot of people - often the ones who can't get formula either :)
So they literately have what the adults have - but it's easier to chew it than cut it with primitive cutlery :) It's obviously not common in developed countries but certainly in deprived areas it's not uncommon :)

sorry if that seems a bit cryptic - I'm trying not to launch into a very long and indepth lecture about tribes and semi developed areas regressing etc :D I do love my anthropology :D
