Personally I suggest a main anti virus (Avira or Avast)
    Malwarebytes as a secondary scanner
Spybot for its IMMUNISE feature as well as scanning
FIREFOX with the NOSCRIPT plugin to make browsing bomb proof (But not idiot proof)

    ^:rotfl: Idiot-proof! I agree with Rik here;)
Many thanks for the compliment busenbust.

I'm only well informed because I have read the many threads yourself, aliEnRIK, Browntoa and many others have made here concerning AV/Malware.

^Not a problem; and we all learn from another I believe ;).

I have SpywareBlaster installed: extremely light-weight footprint. ;)

    Perhaps also Windows Defender?

Oh, and welcome to MSE :hello:
Any point in putting SpywareBlaster on if you already have Windows Defender with RealTime protection turned on?

Firefox with Noscript plugin should block a lot of nasties.

For me it's not a case of one particular program saving my bacon, so to speak;) I very much believe in installing an anti-virus/-malware program that works in conjunction with the rest of your security suite...multiple levels of defense -.

  • Is Windows defender any good?

I heard a while back that it could cause a few problems and updates where a problem as well but that was a while ago?

As I am using a netbook I am looking at programmes that don't take over your system and do not use all your computers resources.

The 2 work completely differently to one another
All spywareblaster does is block ip addresses in the hosts file (And possibly the whitelists in firefox and IE). So if your computer tried to connect to a dodgy infected page/link it simply wouldnt allow it

Theres certainly no harm in using spywareblaster

Personally I wont use defender, I find it next to useless

Cheers. Thought it was an agent running on the machine.

What do you use instead of Defender?

It's a matter of opinion (see Rik's response above, for example); I am running Defender on an XP and Windows 7 machine and I can honestly say its system resources are minimal (that in itself some might find suspect;) ). But I repeat: for myself, it's all about several layers of defense. And as Rik suggested: Firefox and NoScript and also Adblock Plus are just superb.

    HTH.
  • Thank you alll for the good advice
