    J's Herby Cheese Bread

    Mix ingredients together in this order below with a fork until it forms into a ball, then finish with clean hands:


    8oz SR flour

    1.5oz fat (any will do: butter/marg/suet/spread/reserved fat from cooking joints, etc)

    4oz grated cheese

    Handful of herbs (I prefer chives )

    1 egg

    Up to 1/4 pint of milk (add gradually as if making scones. You may not need the whole amount )

    1 tsp mustard.


    If too wet add more flour, if too dry add more milk.

    Method for bread to accompany a soup:


    Pat/roll it into a circle on a tray.

    Cut it into 6 wedges and slightly part them.

    Glaze with egg or milk.

    Looks like this as they go in the oven:

    15 mins or until golden around 200 degrees

    I baked JJ's cheese bread today. My first attempt and MmmmmMmmmmMmmmm it is lovely! I am hooked. I added some fried off bacon and onion left over from the quiche I also baked. Scrumptious.
    I then made chocolate flapjacks and a banana, strawberry and chocolate crumble.
    Safe to say my waistline feels a little expanded after today.....
    Mum of 2 monkey. 4 yrs and 2 yrs :j
    Starting again...

    The JJ's bread I made yesterday with the added Garlic Granules was yummy. I reckon it costs approx 84p to make - so 14p a piece.
    We had some for lunch so a quick, tasty, cheap snack.
    I cooked a crumble while the oven was on.

    I've only recently tried some icing - disaster!!

    Anyway I've picked up this recipe for Practice Icing from an American site:
    Quote:
    This recipe is NOT MEANT TO BE EATEN. Don’t. Ok, you can try it but I’m pretty sure you won’t like it.

    1 c. shortening
    4 c. powdered sugar
    water
    Cream the shortening until….creamy. Add 3 tbs. water and mix until incorporated. Gradually add the powdered sugar. Once the sugar is in you can check the consistency, if it’s too thick add another tbs or so of water until it’s the consistency that you want.
    Can someoe put it into UK ingredients/measurements.

    Shorting I know to be somthing like margarine. Are we talking soft marg or something like Stork. Would lard do? Powder sugar I take to be icing sugar.

    I'm asking the question because I just want to be sure and it is only required for practice purposes

    Of course feel free to share your Practice Icing recipe.

    Shortening is like Trex, or a lot of supermarkets sell their own brand vegetable shortening.

    I am confused by that recipe though as it sounds like it will come out like butter icing.

    as daisiegg says, shortening is like Trex - a white dairy free substance used primarily for baking & powdered sugar is icing sugar

    why not just practice with butter or margerine?
  • I've been experimenting with yeast bread while it's warm enough for the bread to rise reasonable quickly. Yesterday I attempted a wholemeal and polenta loaf - all I will say about that one is that the birds seem to like it!

    Today, I decided to be a bit more conservative and I've made a brown bread using the recipe from the Ballymaloe Cookery School book. It's out now, looks OK but I won't cut it until it cools a bit. The birds won't get this!

    I too made JJ's cheesy herb bread last night after seeing it on here. Will def. make again. And my two boys at uni can make it. Thanks so much for posting.

    On a. Different note can anyone point me in the direction of all the lovely recipes page on here. I did find it ages ago but can't remember how I got to it. Thank you .
