USB Encryption

I've used TC to encrypt whole USB drive, set up an encrypted container file (as recommended above) and just recently used it on my Samsung NC-10 netbook to encrypt the whole of the boot drive.
All these work faultlessly... particularly impressed with the hard drive encryption and the way it proves the recovery disc prior to encrypting the whole boot drive.
...and in case you missed the main point - it is FREE!

Why don't you create a truecrypt container on your hard drive or USB drive, Stick a portable copy of the truecrypt software on the same drive and carry it with you wherever you go. You can then run the software from the portable drive itself and decrypt the encrypted volume. Very easy and safe...................the only problem with Truecrypt and a good few others is that in some companies disable you from installing s/w so you are not able to run or install the exe^Lol

. When it comes to Mac and Windows, it's a case of the carriage follows the horse. Don't get me wrong, because I fully recognise the horse has learnt many lessons from the carriage too.

For the reasons as outlined by sharkie
In that case have you tried FreeOTFE? It does require admin to create the container or encrypt the drive on your USB Disc (which is something usually done on your computer anyway). You can the use the portable FreeOTFE Explorer to get access to these files (not on the fly though) in the event of lacking Admin Privileges. I am in the process of trying this myself..........Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0 -

Thanks for the suggestion. It's the same with any software based encryption - the admin has to create a container to allow the program to run in such environments. If I take the drive to another company's computer, they have to create a container... etc. I can't ask every admin of each company I visit to to this. There's no universal system which all computers use for encryption, hence a hardware based approach such as a keypad on the drive to unlock is preferred, at least for now.
But you only need to create the encrypted container once on your USB drive, don't you? Even if that is not the case then FreeOTFE Explorer will allow you to do so without admin rights.

I use Truecrypt.
You can use it as a portable app from your memory stick, provided you have administration rights on the computer you are plugging in to. If not, then truecrypt needs to be installed on the computer.
I hope this makes sense.0 -
