permanently switch off Google suggestions

Options
Any advice how to permanently switch off Google Suggestions? I've got a new laptop with Windows 7 and I can switch off the query suggestions under preferences each day but after I've shut down they come up again the next day. Apart from a lot of the suggestions being inappropriate I just find it irritating!

No problems whatsoever with Windows 7 (and XP) here; wonder if it affects a particular version - I'm using Professional. Possible firewall issue? Third-party add-on? Affecting only IE/FF? Anyone else with the same problem...

It's not a fault, it's just a function of Google

    Open Google
Top right click on settings > search settings
    Look near the bottom
Put dot in the box which says "do not offer search suggestions" or something
Click apply, Google no longer gives you search suggestions

    Oopps :D

Obvious question first, have they cleared all temporary cookies etc. Have they tried creating a brand new profile on computer. Could be a corrupted ntuser.dat file (if Windows 7 uses them)
