Laptop dead - got XP disk - help required

Options
Please help!

Laptop died sometime ago. Think it was due to installing netgear but don't know why this would kill it.

Finally managed to get a re-boot disk after nearly two years but having probs!

I try and open in safe mode with command but all I get is a black screen with safe mode written in all four corners and the details of the XP service pack in the top centre. No command bit or anything.

Can someone walk me through what I am meant to do on here please?

Firstly you wouldn't install a netgear router to your computer.
To install windows you need to boot from the disk i.e load the disk up to do this depending on the laptop it should say. Escape, F12, F1 check the keys it will tell you. And its quite simple from there on.
  • I never said I did install a Netgear router. It was a wireless adapter.

I'm not very computer savvy and I would appreciate some help, step-by-step.

  • Just to be clear, I can't anywhere past a black screen with a cursor. I boot the laptop up with the disk in and I don't get any options other than the usual about opening in safe mode but even then I can't get into safe mode properly.

I boot without the disk and then put it in but nothing.

Should I be pressing something as it loads up?

there should be an option just as it boots to "Enter BIOS" which is normally F2

    once in that screen

    bios-screen2.jpg

there should be an option to change boot order , you need to make sure that the CD drive is the first option

what make/model laptop is it ( look at the stickers underneath)

  • I experimented before you came back to me and I have managed to get the Windows Advanced Options menu up...is there anything on here I could select?

Sorry to be so dense but I really do know nothing about this side of computers!

  • If I select that Closed, all I get is a black screen with a pointer after the windows logo screen.

I have resiged myself to the fact that I will lose everything so don't worry about that!
