Personally, I would simply PVA the walls to prevent further chipping of the paint and line the walls. People are always amazed when they see the quality of finish just by lining walls with a good thickness lining paper.
I did this to a small room in my house recently and my father in law who had seen the "before" state thought I had got it plastered!
I don't like painted plaster personally as I find it too cold so always line walls I paint.
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Couldn't agree more. :beer:0 -
A high grade lining paper will probably do the job for you. I would use a matt paint for the finish because vinyl finishes tend to highlight imperfections.0

No need to get tetchy - I'd rather the OP come back and say what he had rather than speculate TBH and it may be that he is confused and meant plasterboard. BUT he'd feel a right nerk if, with everyone here talking about skimming, he went ahead and did so tomorrow only to find it all over the floor in the evening.I know that, I was only offering you a possible theory!
Cheers

Not tetchy in the least, just took the lead from your reply and reciprocated in kind.
Nothing wrong in trying to clarify the situation but no need for the curt reply with exclamation mark in reply to my first comment. I don't know if the OP is confused or not, I only suggested it as a possible. Maybe you should look at how your own words come across before coming back at me.0 -
OK sorry - but noone else seemed to have spotted it.before I mentioned it. Anyway it was the "I know that" bit I was responding to not the exclamation mark at the end which in my case was an emphasis not sarcastic as I'm sure yours was as well.

There's no need to say sorry, likely most people noticed it but didn't mention it, as the OP is a DIYer :cool:0 -
Well I do appear to have upset him.PROFESSIONAL_LANDLORD wrote: »There's no need to say sorry, likely most people noticed it but didn't mention it, as the OP is a DIYer

Not upset at all. I read your posts a lot and think you talk a lot of sense, I'd be more likely to take your advice than not tbh. I just felt you were coming across as unnecessarily curt in your reply to me and I answered accordingly. I accept that was not your intention. It was not my intention for the 'I know that' part to be sarcastic, I was only pointing out I did read the post and knew what the OP had stated (in case you had thought I'd skim read and missed something). A case of miscommunication over the net I suppose.
Anyway, I hope the OP clarifies what his wall actually is, otherwise as you say, he may well find things don't go according to plan. As for me, I'm spending the day pulling off plasterboard when I can think of a million other things I'd rather be doing. :rolleyes:0 -
No worries. I'm finishing my blasted accounts today and I'd rather not be doing that either!
