Regardless of the value of the anecdote I think the responses to carolT who is a respected poster on this board (I respect her therefore she is respected) were unnecessarily rude.I think....0

Batchy, Redditch was severely affected in the last recession and is showing signs of being again. You only have to look in the local papers to see that there are virtually no jobs. It is an ok area if you are commuting out to work.
It is only going to get worse. You cant compare it to places like london and Aberdeen.0 -
I have read bits and pieces of the thread...but not all of it....reading stuff on here is my downtime and this thread got really heated....and I can't be having stress in my downtime.:D
Isn't it a bit like that movie 'Sliding Doors'? I rarely watch films but saw this one a few years ago with G Paltrow, though I heard that a similar film was made in the 1940's.
It showed the outcomes of her life in parallel when she missed the tube and then when she got the tube.
For Carolt, it was one of those bad happenings (she got gazumped) that ended up being a positive thing. CT gets to relocate at minimal cost (as rents) to get DD into school of her choice. DD settles in, and CT can then buy just outside catchment (cheaper) cos once your kid is in, it's for the full 5 or 7 years.
So, good random bit of luck as life is made up of these bits and pieces of luck, whether bad or good. We have to live/adjust around it.0 -

so you believe what the biggest 'LANDLORD' (being major property owner) in the UK says about house prices? IE NATIONWIDE? I assume because you don't do you own research?
Please show me a house off rightmove using property bee, that has shown a 10% price increase from 2008 to 2009 ... You wont be able to... in my previous post ive explained I can show you around 45 (can't remember the number now) that did fall... but NON that increased. Also... would be interesting to track this... 'property' so WHEN or IF it does sell we can track the SELLING PRICE on houseprices.co.uk.
Good luck...Plan

Cheers for this,
I haven't done my historical research of the past, I like to base it on the present... I don't have the resources or the time to look into every area around the country or the UK so specifically look to my local area of interest for obvious reasons, THis is the reason I am of the opinion I have. House prices are FALLING STILL.
Scotland is a market i don't understand (offers and acceptance etc so wouldn't even begin to discuss its ups or downs), I believe what you are saying about Aberdeen, and London.
London, driven by bonus's and supply and demand, and just BEING LONDON and
Aberdeen by 'oil' industry and its BTL portfolio's and surplus cash.
I like Redditch compared to Birmingham (where i am from) and work in Redditch, fortunate to have a quality employer not effected by local economy or that surrounding it. I agree its fairly badly effected, but so is most of the west midlands and worcestershire... DROITWICH is also badly effected.
As for the jobs, I keep an open mind, employers recuit where recruiting is needed, if you are the right spec and quality, you will find employment locally, or not too far away! I would like to class my skills as required, and am worth my salary all year round due to SAVINGS and EFFICIENCIES i can make, so do not consider my position threatened. Hopefully that continues as time drags on and you push the position as far as it can be taken.Plan

Fantastic look on things, just hits the nail on the head with how, things can work out for the better.
Just adding to that, regardless of whether you have made 300k by the time your 60 or if youve made 300k another way by the time your 60... what matters is the quality of life getting to that stage... STRESS or NO STRESS.
is being a home owner STRESSFUL or STRESS FREE...
same goes for being a renter??
its much of a muchness... those who don't want shackles round their ankles prefer renting, regardless of cost, others prefer the security home ownership offers.
Some people choose to buy cars, where as some people see the benefit of cheap car leasing regardless of ownership needs... etc.Plan

Crashophobia, I'm afraid, Like xenophobia or homophobia, it excuses all kinds of behaviour that might be deemed unacceptable in polite circles. There is an opposite, of course, Rampophobia.
Statistics about the national or regional picture are all well & good, but if they don't seem to be in accord with people's reality, then anecdotes will appear. Some will try to shout these down, because they are not 'objective,' but they are valid for the person relating their experience. The housing market is a complex, multi-faceted entity, which data struggles to describe at street/area/ property type level.
To give a non-housing parallel, people may be told that in their county crime has fallen, but if they happen to be in a burglary hotspot, this won't chime with their experience.
I've come to the conclusion that what people say individually on here is of little importance, so disregard this post if you don't like it; just don't tell me I'm a!!!!!!. The entire contents of this forum on their own are unlikely to cause people to make decisions one way or the other, especially as few read it, and there is so much interference on the line, everything being filtered through the reader's perception.
So yes, present data and argue about it politely, but please don't expect the rest of society to live in Numberland. I would advise anyone who thinks they know what's going on to visit the thread on the other, more popular channel, 'To those selling in these difficult times.' It's pure anecdote, but it's more real than any Nationwide index, which is why it's been on the front page so long!0
