How to Clean Soft toys

I know that soft toys get a bit manky because they get dusty, and greasy from handling. I just wondered if anyone has managed to bring back a modicum of softness to their dearly- loved bears and bunnies:j0

All mine go in the washing machine! I leave them to dry then give them a going over with a hairbrush and they come up good as new!:j30/7/10:j

Mum used to wash ours in a pillowcase to stop eyes etc from coming off, but they were fine like that in the machine. I used to worry about my Bugs Bunny pinned up by his ears - thought it must hurt!!! Dried quick enough in the sun though.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0

Hi budgeteer,
I usually pop them into the washing machine to freshen them up because if they are really dirty then I think I have nothing to lose.
There's an earlier thread on cleaning soft toys so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.

Wash in a pilllow case and then line dry but for getting softness back then I would tumble dry them for a short while - brings them up a treat!0

I hope someone can help me save my son's 12 year old favourite soft toy - an old Ty duck which is filled with some kind of poly beads. Label was sponge clean only, but it had gotten so yucky that I decided to hand wash it. I stuck it on the radiator to dry but then it went really crusty
and still seemed quite yucky. So then I rinsed it again and left it to air dry - but now it's so unbelievably smelly, probably from the stale water.
What can I do to save the duck?
Getting rid of him is absolutely not an option

DS had a TY lizard, which in desperation went in the machine, and came out good as new :T Make sure the seams are good, or you may just be left with duck-skin:rotfl:
I'll merge this with the existing thread later.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
Hi Blimus,
I would suggest unpicking the toy to remove the beads, then hand-washing the unstuffed toy, before letting it dry thoroughly.
Is the bead stuffing washable? If so,wash and dry them thoroughly. If not,you will have to replace the stuffing.
I had to do the above to clean my childhood Humpty-Dumpty.He looked a treat afterwards.
Hope this helps x0 -
put ducky in an old pillow case (in case he bursts open) and knot the end! then put in the washing machine on the gentlest cycle. use your usual washing powder but i would add a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda or some soda crystal and then wash. either air dry or tumble dry on cool - no radiator hun as those little beads will get too hot and stick together. if that doesnt work then sorry, I dont know what else would work apart from unpicking him - emptying him and refilling with fresh beads and popping in a lavender sachet, before sewing him back up.0

Stick it in the washing machine, I stick everything in and nothing has ever ruined. At least you know all the bugs will disappear! Good luck!0
