How to Clean Soft toys

Hi all

My 6 yr old son's favourite soft toy is looking rather grim! He used to be cream & white but having been dribbled & sweated on for the last 6 yrs (DS uses it as a pillow) he looks filthy! He gets put in the washing machine regularly but I wondered if there was something that I could soak him in that would "lift" the colour a little.

Any suggestions?

    Hi Everyone

I have just returned from a big jumble sale and brought some lovely soft toys, they look fine but I want to give them a good clean to be on the safe side before giving to my little one,

Some toys say Surface clean only?? How would i do this and would i be okay to put them in the washing machine on the hand wash setting?

Also some of them have batteries in them so obviously i would not put these in the machine so how do i get these clean?

    Any suggestions would be fantastic.

    Thanks for looking,

    Suzanna

I've always put soft toys in the washing machine - unless they've got batteries in them of course! They always come out really nicely. I've never understood any soft toy which has been designed for children which you can't actually wash!

I suppose with any of them with batteries in you would just have to try and surface clean them with a damp cloth.
  • dry shampoo works well if you have some for one you cant put in the machine

    Thank you,

sorry for the silly question, but do you buy dry shampoo or do you just put normal stuff on the cloth and wipe over?
  • I have washed many many soft toys in the wm. Always came out great. Many can even be tumbled on low.
    Put the kettle on. ;)
  • put in a pillow case

Don't let your little'un see them on the line!
I have an enduring memory of seeing my teddy swinging from the washing line by his ears, I've been traumatised for life :rotfl:

If you are only going to surface wash put them in the freezer to kill off bed bugs/dust mites etc which might be lurking.....but the recommended time for bug killing is 2 weeks
One day I might be more organised...........

for ordinary soft toys - I usually put them in washing machine with bio powder then tumble dry. for the ones with batteries, I clean them with a damp rag dipped in soapy water for surface dirt, then spray with anti bacterial spray. leave them to dry, and if they look clean smell clean I assume they are clean! kids crawl around on floors etc anyway, and i dont think hand-me-down toys are a great threat to their health!
