Has anyone sent their passport off to tax credits before?

  • Just read this:mad:

I sent my passport by special delivery, delivered to them on 2nd December 2009, have i had it back? No, do they know where it is? No, Are they going to refund my £75 for my passport which was only renewed in September? No!

I think it is utterly ridiculous how they have misplaced passports like this, it makes u wonder if there is some inside scam going on where they are selling them on. A wee call to Watchdog!

I have made 18 phone calls to them, and have just about given up!

All of you who have sent your passport in, PLEASE go to your local Citizens' Advice and ask them to flag it up as a Social Policy item. This way, it will get circulated to other offices and it will be raised at the highest level. And you can ask them too if they can try to telephone to get your passport back. But it's madness for them to ask for this - you could have taken it in to your local office better than sending it off. Ask CAB if they can find out if HMRC can be held liable for the cost of replacement if they have lost it.

Further to the latest posts, i have contacted watchdog, if we all do the same it might help.

    Will be looking into CAB.

I cant beleive that they would even ask for it! What are they going to do with it?! I would definately go to watchdog. If they asked for it, when they recieve it they should take responsibility for it and ensure it is returned to you.
  • Have located the reciept from sending it recorded delivery, it was sent to postcode NE88 1ZB so I am going to google it, see if theres a number for that office and try and get in touch with the actual people who deal with them rather than someone from the normal call centre. Will keep you all updated!

Why call Watchdog? They could slag off HMRC but there's not actually anywhere else you can go so it's a bit pointless. You need to deal with HMRC regardless of what you think of them.

In regard to the passport issue, the last I heard was they are about 4-5 weeks behind dealing with mail where ID is involved (ie. passports, birth certificates). Only after they start dealing with the mail can they go through the verification process. So normally it's only a couple of weeks but right now you are talking about 2 months before you get the passport back.

In the mean time, make official complaints and possibly try to get your MP involved if you need the passport urgently.

This is where the documents are manually verified to make sure they are genuine. The documents are verified for child benefit and tax credits.

You are highly unlikely to be able to speak to anyone unless you are calling on an official capacity and/or you have the correct number for a specific person/department.

QUOTE=twinnymum;29434611]Oh no, I already sent my passport in earlier this month!

I also had an appointment with the Inland Revanue where I had to take all of my ID in last week and the advisor said he cant believe that they sent for my passport AND made me go to that appointment. He advised me to ring them there and then and demand to know where my passport was! Long story cut short - I spoke to a manager and he said there was no possible way of finding out where my passport was and that it could take months! [/QUOTE]

Write a letter, dates/times of all phone calls as much as possible, (I would also mention that particular chap's comments, but then I would be v pee'd if he's said that to me.....after all who has the bottle to refuse to send their passport when they asked ? not me). Write COMPLAINT as it's title and as the first line of the envelope address, fire it off recorded to them, state clearly that you want written confirmation by return, that day, to confirm they have either LOST your passport, or stating the latest date they will return it to you.

Good luck with trying to get a new one from Passport peeps while yours isn't "lost/stolen or destroyed" . As I suspect that might be a real hassle :(

Have a wee look over on

These peeps have all been royally frisked by the Tax Credits system (as have I) and know every which way to make your point with HMRC - and the more we "little people" stick together the more effective we are.

i had to send my sons passport to them, it took 11 weeks to get back, then it turned out they needed it as they had entered his name wrong.
  • I don't know if it would keep them happy but a solicitor can provide a "Certified Copy" of a document that will in many cases be as good as an original.

I spend quite a lot of time certifying copies of docs for friends and family.

You could always pop into your local solicitors and see if they will do you some certified copies, they might make a small charge but if you use the firm anyway I suspect they will do the for free.

I hate sending original docs off and will always ask them if they will accept a certified copy.
