Norton anti virus - should I buy the subscription ?

Options
I'm sure this has been discussed on here before.....

It is coming up to the anniversary of when I bought my Dell laptop from PC world. With it I was given a 'free' Norton anti-virus software package but I am now getting daily reminders to renew my subscription at a cost of around £70.

Should I pursue this or are there any free anti-virus packages available to download free.

Please my IT knowledge is basic !

Many thanks
Simon

simple answer is NO. uninstall it using a norton removal tool(google) and instal a free one. AVG is very good(get it from filehippo.com)also get spybot S&D,adware se and spyblaster all available free from filehippo these 4 programs will keep u secure

If you would rather carry on with Norton then the one User 3 PC version of NIS 2010 is around £22 at Amazon. Don't know where you get £70 from, Norton 360?

    Free = Microsoft Essentials.

I find that it is better than AVG.

They invariably price the renewal fee way above what it would cost to buy 'as new'. Standard ploy by Symantec and McAfee.

After using AVG for years I had problem with V9.0 and changed to Avast! which I am very happy with. It doesn't seem to slow the pc like AVG did.

I also use Comodo firewall (a firewall is essential), SpywareBlaster and Windows Defender. I occasionally run Malwarebytes to check for malware.

Norton (the newer versions at least) use less memory than AVG (20 vs 108 MB...)

    No!

You know when people post on a thread to say something that's been crap, expensive and crippled millions of PCs for over a decade now has a lighter touch -is entirely the wrong product.

Uninstall (unplug your router first) and then install something recommended like www.microsoft.com/security_essentials or www.filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus/

Restart, plug in your router and away you go.

I assume you have Vista which has an excellent firewall in it already (and your router has one) so you don't need anything else.
