I see what you mean - thanks for the links. :T

The government's secrecy sets a worrying precedent. It seems like the official reason for blocking web servers is to prevent the distribution of child !!!!!!. In which case, wouldn't it be possible to block just images from the banned sites?

At least that might provide more reassurance that the right kind of sites are on the blacklist, as opposed to ones that just contain "politically sensitive" information that the government wishes to supress.

It's the thin end of the wedge - What happens if we all start using proxies and one by one they all get shut down, country by country, it becomes some sort of prision planet, our parents / grandparents didn't fight wars for our liberty and freedom for us to just give it away!
The question is would you put your life on the line to protect the freedom and I don't mean by rallying online, sitting in a tree for a fortnight or extremism. There is a major out cry over any miltary action that we take part in and the reasoning behind them.I don't know about you but 2 world wars is twice bitten 3 times shy. If nipping things in the bud, even misguided at time then fine. Would our grand/parents have like to avoid world conflicts, of course.
There will be a nanny state regardless of goverment or the will of the people. Political Correctness is good for the genuine innocent ie kids. Everyone else can make their choices, I can always move to another country that shares my views if I wish.

As sickening as I find child !!!!!!, I am not convinced of net censorship. You block it, you drive it underground.

What really gets me is how the police and media broadcast all the facts when one of these scumbags is caught; "we only caught him because he used his credit card.." or "we only caught him because we managed to find his laptop...".
Why tell them how to avoid detection??

    Think of it this way.

    1. Agenda 2. Problem. 3. Reaction. 4.Solution.

    1. Restrict the Internet / Inadvertently also free speech. 2. Single person convicted of Child !!!!!!, but more enforcement of the Net needed, "for your safety". / Person could be a patsy. 3. Public Agree or don't disagree. (Same thing). 4. Restrict the Internet / Agenda Implemented.

To be honest, if push came to shove, I just don't know, but the more people you can try and help, the better.

I think it was Ron Paul (US) that said government shouldn't interfere with families, why should government tell the people what is correct?

Families should stick together and parents should tell their children what is correct. Simple.

NSA is of the hook and can now monitor all of USA's internet traffic unhindered

..because NSA is monitoring everyone and not just some individuals, there is no case to answer!
