broadband coming to an end

I have been on samknows and tbh although the site is friendly, to a middle aged gal like me it all seems like gobbledegook. Sam knows says

"there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection.

The following services are available in your location:
BT Wholesale ADSL
BT Wholesale ADSL Max
TalkTalk (CPW) LLU"

I need to change from Bt broadband - I am paying £22 per month for bb and also line rental, Next month my contract is up. I don't know if there is a maximum gb download allowance with my current bb package.

But I dont understand all the jargon. Not at all. And I would be delighted if someone could help me through it. In a way that makes sense to my old brain.

Plus net seemed to be good, but there doesn't appear to be any way of telling what it will cost months down the line, And how long would I have to sign up for.

I dont want to pay £35 per month to BT as it seems a lot for little phone use (we use mobiles). we have 2 laptops and a desktop, pretty heavily used. Daughter watches a little online tv but otherwise just mainly surfing.

Any suggestions - I have heard bad things - mainly on here - about talk talk and tiscali who bothseem to be cheapest. So I am lost - oh and I cant get O2's good service only Access.

Any help folks, I know I am asking the earth?

A.

  • there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection. <--- this just means that you already have broadband so can't order a "new" connection, you can however switch, but you need to ask your current provider for a MAC to give to whoever you choose to go to (this is the broadband equivalent to keeping the same number when you swap mobile providers). You could cancel broadband and then sign up as a new customer, but this will mean you'll be without it for a number of days/weeks and will often get a new connection charge - this is avoided if you swap with a MAC number. you may even be offered a better deal if they want to keep your custom.

The following services are available in your location:
    BT Wholesale ADSL
    BT Wholesale ADSL Max
    TalkTalk (CPW) LLU"

this shows which services are available at your exchange - ADSL max is the standard "up to 8Mb" service you get from BT or whoever else re-sells BT wholesale, in terms of alternate providers, talktalk is the only one and will offer broadband and calls for around the twenty quid mark. I know CS does matter, but have a think how many times you've needed to call them over the last year before putting too much weight on this element.

My contract is up with BT this month. I'm on Option 3 (Unlimited) BB with Evening and Weekend Call Plan plus Friends and Family etc. They are offering (to keep me) to increase my Call Plan to Anytime at no addl charge and reduce my BB payment to Option 1 level wth no loss of service but I need to sign up fo a furher 12 months. Think I'll stick with it - I'm going to save about £30 a month. Doesn't hurt to ring them and say "my contracts up soon and I'm thinking of moving on but what can you do for me?" Might not work for you but maybe worth a try I think.

    Cheers

    Thanks Andy

SamKnows then goes on, after listing talktalk, to give me a whole list of comparator services.

It is this I find really confusing. O2 is only listed as Access on this list, so that seems to be no good, right?

I wonder if I sign up to Plus Net and the service / speed is rotten, then is there a cooling off period.

I am not looking at saving on call costs - we make v few, and mostly by mobile. Could lose the landline. But I need to service several laptops with a bb connection - am I unrealistic in looking at less than 22 quid per month for this?

    Help greatly appreciated

Have a look at a broadband comparison page - http://www.chooseisp.co.uk/compare/broadband.asp

They offer the same availability details as samknows but show you actual packages you can get with prices and details.

Plusnet for example is offered at either £5.99 or £11.99 depending on where you live.

Plusnet is good by the way, I've used them in the past and would recommend them - especially as O2/Be LLU isn't available in your area.

You're not being unrealistic at all. £22 is certainly on the rather costly end of what's available, and it's typical as BT charge more than a lot of providers.

You can get Plusnet Value for £5.99/£11.99 with 10GB usage, or you can get Plusnet Premium for £15.99/£19.99 (depending on where you live) with Unlimited usage.

Go back to samknows and do an exchange search, then look at the list under 'LLU Operator Presence'. These are the ISP's that are unbundled on your exchange and so will offer the best deals.
O2 Access is not good, O2 LLU is fine.

Option 3 isn't unlimited - it's subject to a FUP of 100GB. Break that, and get throttled to 1mbit from 5-12 every day for the next month...

My mate has BT's 8MB service Last month he downloaded 100 GB and BT called telling him he'd be charged £100 for every additional GB.
    I went away and now I'm back.:j:j

That's outrageous if that's true! Although it works out at about 10p per MB, which is about the same as extra data charges on mobile broadband...

It still seems incredible of BT considering most ISPs either just throttle you or make you move up to a higher package.

I just looked this up - and BT said they only charge £1 per 1GB you go over and only if you go over for 2 months in a row.
