Incredibly slow broadband speed, BT say it's fine

Firstly, I think your security is fine. The bit about 'Password not configured' is to do with the stats page login I think not the WPA2 encryption.

Routerstats is configured to work out of the box with quite a few routers but it may be that yours isn't one of them. You can either read through the bespoke setup instructions or you can try wireshark. It might be worth reading up and finding one that lists your router as compatible.

If you manually switched off your router then that would indeed account for the low connection time shown on the stats page. If this is the case it may be that you don't have a problem.

If BT are saying the profile is in the process of updating this probably just means the exchange is waiting for the standard 3 days of continuous connection before increasing your speed again which is what we said. The 18 hours they quoted would bring you to about that point I think.

Try not to do anything to interrupt the connection and see if you can get to 3.5 days. If by that point your speed is still low then call BT back and get them to confirm that your profile has increased. Once they confirm this you can reboot your router and it should bring the speed back up. Hopefully the router will resync automatically at around 3 days when it detects the change so you wont have to do anything. Keep your eye on that stats page and let us know if the connection time resets.

Came home tonight to find a glorious 4.8mb. Not the 6mb they said, but I'm not arguing. It's a good bit more than I was getting previously.

One point though, BT said to switch my router off and on tonight and after that my speed would be restored. I haven't switched it off. I'm assumung I shouldn't?

if you're getting 4.8 at the moment, I'd leave it alone ;)

I'd leave well alone since it sounds like you have a router that resynced automatically. If it hadn't you would have needed to restart to router before you saw the increase.

But you got a result. Well done :T

Not sure what caused the speed drop but let's hope it was a one-off.
  • Actually, all my clocks are blinking at me so I think there was a power cut some time today. Must have been the men standing and looking into the hole they have dug in the street outside. So I guess they restarted the router for me. :)

Thanks for the help guys, especially you ComplexP.
