What is a "Fair Usage" limit on option 3? I have a family of gamers and will eat 40Gb+ a month easily Op is likely a "victim of traffic shaping/throttling imho.

'Fair Use' on BT Option 3 is 100gb.
Unlike most companies BT counts use rather than just download so the measure up + down to get the total.
  • Just spoke to BT and they have not limited the speed as I thought.

Posting up the router stats could provide a clue about all this. If your current sync rate with the exchange is normal, ie. about 4 MBits then it would point towards the isp throttling your throughput.

If your sync rate is actually down at 0.1MBits then it could indicate a fault with your wiring (or even on the phone line itself despite what the engineer told you).

Does the connection remain stable? Does it drop out? The router stats should indicate how long your current connection has held for. When you use the phone, do you notice any crackling?

Also, make sure that any phones connected via extensions also have filters attached to them.

EDIT: I should probably mention one other possibility - If something happened over the weekend that caused your sync rate to drop to 0.1MBits for even a few minutes (interference near your line, a random voodoo curse) that could well have changed your BT profile to 0.1MBits throughput. It usually takes about 3 days of stable sync rate to get the speed back up in these circumstances.

The exchanges are very quick to drop the speeds at the first sign of trouble and take an age to bring them back up.

I'm not sure what my router stats are? The line does not drop out, just consistanly slow at 0.1 to 0.15mb. No crackling on telephone line.

I've had the problem since Thursday I think, so that's five days.

If he tested the line direct and it was fine, that obviously points to your own setup/wiring

Maybe someones using your router? is it secured?

    Yes, it's secured.

Yeah, that was my suspicion as well. Would be handy to see what the current sync rate is.

Do you get the sync rate from the router stats? I can't find these at the minute.

Yep those are the stats alright. The two headlines are that your connection dropped out just over 1 day ago (which is worrying) but that your current sync rate is looking fine (currently over 6MBits).

So long as BT confirm they are not throttling your connection I would expect you to see an increase in speed once that timer hits about 3 days. However, you've been having the problem since thursday so it looks like you're getting random connection drops.

Ideally, if it drops out we need to know what it does: If it reconnects at 6MBits then that's ok, but if it drops to 0.1MBits for a few minutes and then back up to 6MBits we have a problem because the exchange is likely to set your speed at the lowest point it detects over a rolling period. Unfortunately your router is unlikely to keep a record and it could happen while you're not watching. There are a few programs that will monitor and log the data though so using one of those could help.

The two I know of are 'routerstats' and 'wireshark'.

If I had reset or switched my router on and off yesterday would this cause the connection to be showing as one day old?

I'm downloading router stats at the minute. Very slowly of course!

I just phoned BT again. The guy said my profile needs updated. He went and checked with the disgnostic dept and then called back, saying the profile was in the process of being updated and after 18 hours I should switch off my router, wait three minutes, switch it back on, and hey presto I would have 6mb. This dude seemed a lot more switched on than the last dude.

But does this seem right? If the profile needs updated surely it should have done so by now if the speed initially dropped on Thursday.

I'm no expert, but it looks to me as if your wireless network has no security set up on it? Also, you may want to edit the posts that show your IP address etc. Just to be on the safe side.

Can't get routerstats to work. It's asking for a "URL to Router Stats Page". I'm putting in the URL shown when I'm on my Home Hub Manager stats page = no dice. routerstatsfordummies.com doesn't seem to exist.

I think it does have the security set up right. I hope! The router page says "Use WPA & WPA2", the radio button is checked and my WPA key is entered with nine characters, which it says is maximum strength.
