Hey elantan - read something a few months back that you had a nephew who wound you up by reckless spending and then wanted to go bust on purpose. It really got my goat too so I am asking what happened to him etc etc
Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

I know it sounds awful but I am pleased (obviously not as happy as you are !) as he thought he was invincible and went down this road on purpose - anything he gets he deserves.

Also, weren't you doing the OU money course ? How's it going ? Apologies, I must sound like your stalker !!! (we have conversed before !)

As you say there is so much knowledge to be taken from these boards we could design our own courseread your thread on spreading the word...found it very interesting i do that alot with my friends they just roll their eyes at me now lol I know the feeling. I try not to ram it down people's throats but the temptation to help is simply overwhelming for me hahahaha

Shall start reading your DFW diary more often !!

be warned this one is quite long lol...well i've not updated for a while not that i have a very interesting life ....but here goes...on the car front well it's doing that thing again only now it's happening more often ...i looked to see if we had a warranty but we dont so looks like we need to pay for it ..only problem is no money till next thursday so i just hope it lasts till i can get it to a garage...hubby is due extra money from his wages next month and i was dearly hoping to be able to put it towards our holiday (i still have over £1200 to find to pay for it before i even start on the spending money) ..but we need the car so it'll need to get fixed first...cookery course ..well this is just getting more shambolic every week...this week we learned how to open a packet of noodles and cook them  ....we have a few weeks left and then were done we deff wont be going for level 2 as i think it might just be too hard for us...you never know he may actually want us to do something really complicated like use a tin opener and i dont think were ready for that yet:rolleyes: ....now i dont know what to think of this next bit so i'll just say it and you can tell me what you think....my friend phoned yesterday and asked me to go to lunch with her..i really didnt have the money but we havnt seen each other in a long time so i went...while out she was telling me all about her buying her hubby a new car and buying herself a new car ...i am really happy for them i honestly am but alarm bells started ringing..so i asked her how she was gonna pay for two cars ...she said loans just now but she is in the middle of putting the extra on to her mortgage..i know she just bought a house (about 6 mths ago) and she has quite a bit of equity in it but she is taking alot of it out to put a conservatory on which is a great idea as she has between 3 and 5 kids living with her at anyone time (step kids etc) the rest she is spending on cars and holidays ....pre lbm days i think i wouldve been brilliant go for it ....yesterday i was sitting thinking i hope everything goes great but ....then i'm thinking am i just jelous because i wont ever be doing that ...thoughout the meal she let me know her and hubbys income (we are good friends that way) and i told her ours that got me panicking even more...so what i'm asking is ...do you think i have a big of the green eyed monster showing? or do you think i'm just being too over protective now i'm trying to get my fincances sorted? or what do you think?

TBH it sounds like car crash TV - you're watching a disaster about to happen but can't do anything about it. Does she know about your situation? Have you talked about how you got into it?

All you can do is tell her your concerns, then be there to point her to this site when reality hits her.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

Hi elantan! Sorry to hear about the car, hope it's not too expensive to fix.

At least if you need to take on a second job to pay for it, you have your haute cuisine cookery skills to fall back on! ;)

I think your feelings about your friend are pretty natural....and if there's a touch of green-eyed monster, it just makes you human like the rest of us. :)

My sister-in-law and her hubby have every new gadget going, spend a fortune on designer clothes, go on foreign holidays etc etc......they bought their house off the council for about £18k, probably about 7 years ago now, and it's worth about £100k, maybe a bit more. But over the years they have remortgaged and remortgaged to borrow more and more money to supplement their lifestyle, and they will probably still have that mortgage in 30years time. Now my head KNOWS we are in a much better position financially than they are, and yet we are still always just that little bit short of money, NEVER buy high tech gadgets, go on expensive holidays, and most of my clothes come from George etc, and sometimes I look at their lifestyle with a little bit of envy! Silly I know :o
