Customers why are they so nasty?/Tesco praise

I was in a Tesco filling station the other day with my boyfriend and this particular site was "Cash only, No Credit or debit cards accepted in the kiosk or at pay@pump due to system fault" every pump had a sign saying this and as you drove into the site there was several notices quite clear.

When I was picking some goods up for our journey I noticed several people trying to pay by card ignoring the signs and one even saying "Oh that sign doesn't apply to me as its a tesco credit card" However one customer said "I want to pay by f**king card and I can pay how I want you f**kwit I'm going to make a complaint", the assistant pointed the sign out on the desk and the customer grabbed his hand and the assistant politely asked him to let go as this was just silly. the customer threw the money at him and demanded a receipt. The assistant then said "I'm going to have to ask you leave now and if you wish to make a complaint about this incident call the number on the receipt and they can trace me back through the receipt", He kept his cool really really well and the assistants arm was red and he kept on serving customers, I fired off an email to tesco to say how fantastic he handled the situation.

Why can't customers read signs? or they get nasty to the assistants its not their fault. Some customers really treated the assistants awful, however I've seen this in many places, and then on here when they don't get what they want. We should cut staff in retail some slack.

People just do not look. They have their heads down ignoring everything around. I've seen it at our local Tesco when they have had problems with the chip and pins on some of the tills. They plaster the tills with signs saying CASH ONLY, or NO CARDS but people still try. When they have put all the shopping through the cashier then has to store the transaction and make everyone else wait while they get someone to sort it out.

Out local Morrisons on Friday lost connection on all their chip and pins and had to take all the cards manually. 32 tills with only one person with the slips to do it, they ended up just taking all the details off the card and getting the customer to sign. I can see one of two things happening after that, either people will not have to pay for the stuff or there will be some card cloning and fraud.

When I was walking out the kiosk I saw people try the pay@pump even though the pumps said "Pay at Kiosk only" then big "Cash only" signs". I felt really sorry for the staff. If customers started paying more attention they would have no reason to complain that they only had credit or debit cards (in my example) and in your case was there signs informing customers?

In the Morrisons case it had just happened and they were just trying to deal with it, looked like a group of headless chickens. We just went out got cash from cash machine to pay, as did people behind.

I'm curious to know how many in your case and in tesco turned round and said "I don't use cash machines"

I don't know. At the Morrisons one they were taking card details if you wanted to pay by card and do the old style manual payment.

I used to work in a petrol station and there were some odd ball customers. One woman tried to pay using a scrap of paper with a credit card number scribbled on it.

Another customer wanted to pay by transax which we didn't accept, but insisted on having a manager come and tell him as I didn't have the authority to decide. When the manager arrived she asked me if we took transax (she didn't work in the petrol station), I told her 'no' and she turned around and told the customer we didn't take it.

Another customer put the wrong fuel in the car (premium instead of regular) and wanted us to charge her for regular because she felt it wasn't labeled clearly enough. Premium is supposed to work out more efficient than regular but I resisted the urge to tell her she would end up owing us money.

Thankfully we have none THAT bad, but I can fully sympathise with the staff. We get some pretty awkward customers. I know this won't make much difference, but as a matter of principle, I try to be extra nice and helpful to the nice polite ones.
I'm not bad at golf, I just get better value for money when I take more shots!

For some unknown reason when some people enter a supermarket they turn into some idiot who doesn't read signs that are there for a reason.
