Salt in food?

I'm Scottish and I know so many people who pour tons of salt on everything before they taste it - one girl I work with even puts it on salad! that's part of the reason for Scotland's world leading rates of stroke, heart disease etc etc!
Personally I never add salt at the table but I do add it to boiling water of spuds, rice etc and I would always taste soups that I'm making before adding any. i'm trying not to let my kids get the taste for salt.
I find if I've been out for a meal at any kind of restaurant (even posh ones not that that happens much) i'm always really thirsty afterwardsJust call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -

nodwah, just noticed your location, when I stayed in Glasgow there was an area we nicknamed Spam Valley, but can't mind where it was now.Like good food and drink?
Try Hotel Chocolat and Baileys.

I don't put salt in anything that I cook from scratch except I use a little on pork for the crackling. The only thing I will always put salt on is chips.£2 Savers Club 2011 (putting towards a deposit

I never used to put salt in anything, now I add "seasoning" but to my tastes. What drives me crazy is people who cover everything in salt before they even try it! My mum always used to pour loads of salt on her food before even tasting it, and I have a polish waitress who pours salt on each chip as she eats one... do you want any chip with your salt????
JexI will pay jexygirl the compliment of saying that she invariably writes a lot of sense!0 -
I dont add salt to anything whilst cooking, only to taste when its cooked.
But even then, hardly ever.
I do like salt on a poached egg, chips, or a few grains on a tomato....
Oh..... and it is an absolute MUST on a margarita glass:drool:

I put salt in boiling water for spuds as I think they are one thing you can notice it missing from, and pasta as you are meant to use salted water as it boils more rapidly, and sometimes rice but that's about it.
Sometimes I have salt on chips or salad tomatoes (if they've turned out not to be nice ripe sweet ones) but that's about it.
I sometimes use stock cubes in dishes, and I know they have a lot of salt in, but I don't add any extra elsewhere.
My mum adds salt to everything she boils, which I don't like.A waist is a terrible thing to mind.0 -
Hi Op.
I was taught in cookery lessons at school (many years ago) to add salt to the water when you boil vegetables. Many people I know still do this and also they add salt to their food before tasting the food first. I don't add salt to food now - with two exceptions - boiled eggs and baby new potatoes - I can't resist!0 -
I rarely use salt. In fact, when we moved into our house 3 years ago we bought little salt and pepper shakers, little table ones. The salt in that shaker is still the same, I've never had to refill it and it's still about half full :rotfl: Still got a huge bottle of the stuff in the cupboard, should last me about four decades at this rate!
I don't even add salt to my potatoes, my mum on the other hand pours half a bottle in practically, and salt gets added to everything, do you really need salt in spag bol?! OH's mum is from Singapore, and not sure if it's the norm over there but everything she cooks has TONS of salt in it, OH's dad has high blood pressure and has had 2 strokes, so supposed to not have much salt, but she still does it!
She was helping me in the kitchen on Christmas day, and started trying to add salt to my carrots and neep, I threw her out the kitchen. No wonder his BP hasn't went down if she is adding salt to vegetables!0 -
I stopped adding salt to food many years ago, when I was pregnant. It was so that I could get used to cooking without salt, as it's not recommended for babies & young children. I have not missed it on the whole, however, still have to add salt to an egg & some other things. I find that I use a lot more pepper now though.
I ran a little experiment a few years back, after I noticed people salt their food before tasting. I did two pans of potatoes, one with salt, one without.
I would have liked to say that I poisoned some with the salt content, but they didn't notice the difference. Those that already put on more salt before tasting, could not tell the difference either. So, now no salt in potatoes ever again.
I haven't changed to the lo-salt alternative either, when I do use salt. I'd rather have the real thing, and use a salt grinder.
Funny thing is, I love salted gherkins. Pity that most are pickled in vinegar here in UK, the salted ones are so much better.0
