Once you've got this settled, it would be worth asking in your area about a young carer's group. You will get a lot of support and help from them - and a few fun days out as well.

    I would second this.

My girls go to a young carer's group and they really enjoy it.

    Do think about that, Dee.

Well done on all the support you gave your dad :)

What an appalling and disgusting thing to say, that is not helping the OP it is just offensive. Health professionals do not like using friends or relatives for translation for a start. But the rest of your comment is plain ignorant and rude.

Its not offensive. Its a fact.
Learning the language shouldnt be an issue to someone that lives here should it?

Besides the fact, i don't care what you or any other dried up housewife might think.

This dried up old housewife hasn't :rotfl:

Has not portrayed himself in a very good light, then again the majority of his posts show the same attitude to posters.

Thanks for the support happymumto2 - I thought it was just me that found it abit offensive, thanks

You're very welcome Dee, most of the posters on here are very helpful. Good luck to you and your dad on sorting everything out, as am sure it is a very stressful time for you both.

I worked for many years in an area with a huge Polish and Asian population, and appreciate that many people are not confident in speaking English even though they may be reasonably fluent, especially to those in authority. Thats what translators are for, they are there to be utilised so that both the client (in this case your Dad), and the official are understood by each other so there can be no misunderstandings, and so the necessary information can be gained for both parties without a language barrier causing difficulties.

I've seen that some people can get extra support like bus passes/ disabled badges/ winter payments etc if there awarded DLA, is there any more information on this?
As stated elsewhere Blue Badge available on application. No need to rejustify, those on Higher Rate Mobility get it by 'right'. If you (your father) actually owns a car, on HRM you do not pay road tax. A car can be obtained on the Motability scheme, but personally I would rather have the money and make my own plan. There is no requirement that the disabled person (your father) owns a car. Dad just needs to take it with him to use in any car when it is actually transporting him.
In terms of the listed criteria for a bus pass I would say he qualifies (bullet point 4, and fact he is on HRM) disabled bus pass
    contact your local council.
Best of luck, and well done for all you have achieved so far.

Always appeal. Many benefit applications are turned down without valid reason, either because the person on whose desk it has landed is a nasty little jobsworth, or as a matter of policy (they know that very few will appeal).

Note the 2009 central government statement that many councils have been refusing passes improperly.

If you clearly meet the legal/disability criteria and are refused, you then have grounds for complaint against the council itself for malpractice. That should get them jumping.
