had a letter back from the secretary of state for work and pensions and they will be looking into the situation both you and I are in as it is not a far system. God know when it will be sorted though probably when you and I are pensionable age. The job center finance department are no help so in the mean time we are to live on next to nothing. Hope this clarifies a little in the meantime you could also write to your local MP and get the ball rolling.

the standard letter that they send out is really poorly worded.

when you become eligable for help with your mortgage interest, they increase your benefit by the amount they pay towards your mortgage ...
but instead of paying it to you, they pay it direct to the lender. so by saying that they will pay the interest from your benefit is correct ... but they fail to clearly tell you that they are increasing your benefit by the same amount

The letter would be worded like this
We will pay you for example a single person
£141.70 JSA and take £70.00 to pay direct to the mortgage lender
This looks like they are taking money from the customers applicable amount
but as a single person would only be due £71.70 the amount that is left is the correct entitlement for a single person to JSA

therefore even though badly worded the statement is correct........

I am in your situation ( no other income and claim JSA)
I agree the letter is worded badly. If you have no other income (as I dont - excluding child relating benefits) You will still get the same JSA and the mortgage relief will be paid direct to the mortgage company. You do need to be aware that they only pay mortgage relief for two years if you are claiming JSA. You will also need to contact the mortgage company to discuss how you are going to pay the shortfall as if you have a direct debit set up this will no longer be active, I have to pay mine through a standing order now (this was the case with mine it might not be the same for all but you need to check).
  • Thanks for all the reply it seems i should be ok if they add the money then take it off and my jsa will remains the same, thanks everyone im phoning them tomorrow but seems every letter they send out is either threatening or badly worded, I was made redundant after the place I worked for went into administration so this has been all very stressful..

Yes do not worry it is a shock to the system when you first start having to claim. All the letters are badly wording and I tend to get at least two at a time. One day I got seven letters all in effect just telling me one thing (I am sure the amount they waste on post charges could be much more wisely spent). Hopefully you will not be in this situation long but if your are, you will get used to it.

I have been claiming now for a while, I see lots of posts on here from others who have obviously never had to claim. I understand where they are coming from with their points of view as I thought like that before I was in this situation. Unfortunately no one will understand what it is like and how you are treated / made to feel until you are put it this position.
