Support for motgage help. Will it be deducted from my Job Seekers Allowence?

i am currently claiming jobseekers allowence and i have applied for mortgage help. i got a letter 2day saying

"the money u are entitled to each week includes money towards the interest on your mortgage.
We will take the money from your jobseekers allowence to pay straight to your lender. we will pay your lender every 4 weeks"

Does this mean their going to deduct my benefit?? They said the weekly total is £46.23. My job seekers is £50.95 a week so does that mean their only going to pay me £4.72 a week jsa and the rest to my mortage lender?.

If so it doesn't make sense. Why put a scheme in place and have to apply for something if your not getting any extra money. I can deduct my own jsa and pay it to the lender myself so what's the difference in them doing it? If anything its more hassle because they would pay my lender every 4 weeks but my d/d with my lender comes out monthly, and that means i would then have to contact the bank to change the d/d amount? Whats the point in all that.
Hopefully i've got it wrong i just dont see how when it say they'll take money from my jsa.

Can someone please help??? Do you not get mortgage help and your full jsa? I'll be ringing them tomorrow when there open just worried now.

    It should be extra money.

They give you it with one hand, then pay it to your lender with the other. Your personal money should remain the same.
  • you still get the full amount of JSA the smi is shown as paid to you but in reallity its paid to your lender, the explanation as to why its done this way is to detailed for a forum post.

They will take it from your benefit. I was unemployed for 6 months last year between April and October. I had a p/time job already paying £52 pw so by the time they had taken those wages from my JSA and then the money to pay the interest on my mortgage (which I didn't want them to do because I had insurance which covered that) I was getting 10p per week JSA.

I kid you not, how was I supposed to live on £52.10 per week? Luckily I have a job now :T

That information is incorrect. The Mortgage Interest Payments ARE deducted from your benefit payment.

I have been unemployed since being made redundant in October 2010. I signed on for Income Based Jobseekers Allowance at this time and also registered my requirement for financial assistance with my Mortgage as we no longer had the means to make payments.

After the 13 week period, we received the same letter as mentioned in previous post with regards Mortgage Interest Payments being deducted from our weekly Allowance.

Since the start of Mortgage Interest Payments, my weekly allowance has dropped significantly. My last payment date was 11th May, 2010. I was paid £3.09 for my partner, myself, my six year old son and my TWO year old son to survive on.

The claim award letter dated 12 May, 2010 states that:

From the 23 April 2010 your Allowance will be £3.09 a week. This is because of:
    • A change in deductions from your allowance (my partner does some part-time work. She works 9 hours a week and gets paid £230 a month and a direct deduction of £8 for Water Rates debit)
    • A change in the cost where you live (which is the Mortgage Interest Payments deduction)
There is a document available on the Internet (I am not allowed to post the page due to Forum restrictions) which is actually an internal memo from the DWP. In Section 3 - Changes of this document it states:
From 8.4.10 where payments of mortgage interest are deducted from
    1. IS
    2. JSA(IB) (Jobseeker Allowance (Income Based))
    3. ESA(IR)
    4. SPC
and are paid to a qualifying lender, any amount paid in excess of the borrower’s actual mortgage interest liability has to be applied by the qualifying lender in accordance with paragraph 4 or paragraph 5 of this memo.
I am currently seeking legal advice on wheither the Jobcentre and DWP have acted illegaly on the award of my allowance as UK Law states that my family requires a minimum amount A WEEK to survive on. Due to the deductions applied by DWP and Jobcentre, we now receive less than that amount A MONTH and the welfare of my children is now at risk.

isnt it your partners income that drops your payment?
from my understanding the 100 odd quid you get as a couple is seen as the minimum you would need

Firstly, the "100 odd" quid you get as a couple is half what the law states is the minimum WEEKLY requirement. So, the law is stating that a couple requires about £400 a month as a minimum to survive.

Secondly, yes, her income does drop down the allowance, but do the maths:

£230, my partners MONTHLY wage, from £372.24, which is a months Jobseeker Income Based payment for my family based on a weekly payment of £93.06, is not £3.09!!!

I have a letter from Jobseeker's dated 12 may 2010, that arrived at the same time as my award letter, that specifically relates to the Mortgage Interest Payment, which I am more than happy to make available to anyone to look at. It clearly states in big, black, bold letters "How Much We Will Take Off Your Allowance" and the figure is £104.30 PER WEEK.

You should be receiving child benefit and child tax credits for your children which should be over £100 per week
