School paid for my GCSE's (03) and A levels (05). Only time being charged for resits has come up was when i was at uni, a couple of hundred per module i think. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I wasn't at a private school, just the local comp. Maybe it was down to the school whether they charged or not? This was over 20 years ago though, so it's probably all different now.0

I'm almost the same, a year later on all counts, and I didn't have to pay either. I had to resit a couple to, any neer paid anything.0 -

At my school if you wanted to take optional exams you had to pay, so if the school wanted to enter you for CSE and you wanted to do O'Level as well, your parents had to pay for the O'Level (or vice versa). Now schools won't let you do it, because it makes their league tables look bad if kids take the exams and fail. So they won't let them enter at all if they think they are going to fail.
Yes, this is how I remember it at my school. If they didn't think you would pass you had to pay for the exam, they would pay for the one you defo would passAccept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

I have just texted my friend to say I was wrong but I think you have saved my skin. I will now let her know I was sort of right!0

My son has done a few early GCSEs in the past year and hasn't had to pay, he did want to do a re-sit on one of them (not sure why as he got a good result, think he was in a competition with his mate) I had to pay £4 for that!Kate

I remember having to pay in the 80s. Not for resits, but for O levels. The school wanted everyone to take CSEs, if you wanted to do O levels instead, as I did, then you had to pay. I remember my parents being very cross about it! Nowadays you wouldnt generally have to pay if you attend the school where you take the exams, but an outside / private candidate would have to. You may or may not have to pay for resits and round here ths seems to depend on whether you are likely to pass - if you may well pass school will pay as they want the good result, if youre likely to fail...well they will do whatever thay can to discourage you from taking the exam.0

Wouldn't your parents remember? Also were the doubling of exams the choice of you/your parents or the school? It looks like I'm a school year older than you and didn't pay, so if it was the school's choice then there must have been discrepancies between different schools at that time.
They are away at the moment so I can't ask them. I am not sure my mum would remember anyway! Her memory is awful now she is getting older.Wendy0
