school child taking gcse who pays

I am just wondering who pays for the exams for a school child attending a school to enter exams.

I am sure when I took mine in 1984 at a local comprehensive my parents had to pay for each exam. I seem to rememeber it costing more for some because I entered cse and gce!

My friend thinks this never happened.

She says schools pay and always have.

I have a 15 year old. I guess I can ask school tomorrow but I just wondered if anyone knows what happens now and 20+ years ago

thanks
Wendy

  • I never paid for my O levels nor A levels - aand I sat them in 1984 / 86!

I think that the school / LEA pays for the first sitting but the parent pays for any re-sits, especially as now the exams are modular as it sort of focuses the mind as they say!

Not sure about private schools though - the parent probably pays in this situation.

At my school if you wanted to take optional exams you had to pay, so if the school wanted to enter you for CSE and you wanted to do O'Level as well, your parents had to pay for the O'Level (or vice versa). Now schools won't let you do it, because it makes their league tables look bad if kids take the exams and fail. So they won't let them enter at all if they think they are going to fail.

Thank you. :T that must be what I remember because I doubled up on a lot of my exams and took o'level and cse so my parents must have had to pay for one of them. I have just texted my friend to say I was wrong but I think you have saved my skin. I will now let her know I was sort of right! :D

I left school in 1983,was double entered by the school for O'levels and CSE's ordinary comprehensive, didn't pay - school did. I then went to lower 6th and did a few more O'levels and again didn't pay.

I have seen threads on here mentioning parents paying for exams if they are at a private school.
