The ethernet (1394 Net Adapter) is NOT the wired connection to your router - there should be another ethernet connection. It is either disabled, or hasn't had the drivers installed for it - are there any yellow exclamation marks in device manager. The other thing is, you would be better turning off the wireless when trying to connect by cable - there is usually a switch on the laptop or a key sequence like Fn + F10 - they are all different.

It states that the device is working properly, same with the wireless! The ethernet (1394 Net Adapter) shows as being connected, however when I go on the internet, it is not working. The wireless will connect for 3 seconds then disconnect.

Sorry, as you can probably tell I am no good with the technical side of computers!!

So the ethernet is not connected then! Oops!!

I just don't understand how the person who repaired the laptop could connect to the internet wirelessly but it won't now! Unfortunately it was a friend of a friend who repaired it and I am unable to get in contact with him!

By the way the ethernet is plugged into the right hole, it's showing not connected on the computer!

I will reiterate the following, if you don't mind: the above is NOT the wired (card) adapter (NIC) that you need to look for; what you want to look for is the Ethernet NIC...can you tell us whether it is present in Device Manager? See the picture below.

and, once again, forget about the wireless setup (for the meantime)....we/you need to resolve the hard-wired connection first of all nikki.

    Something like this nikki:

It shows an Ethernet connection with a question mark and exclamation mark on top, the status states that there is no driver, I have found the disks for the comp, and clicked on drivers, reloaded them but still the same!

Whats the name written against the name of the Network Card. If it's missing the drivers you won't have a network connection. it needs to have no symbol next to it

One thing you could try is by uninstalling it and then rebooting, if it finds the drivers it will reinstall them.If you have the original CD that came with your laptop you can insert that, if not it's a case of manually dowloading them..Sorry haven't read whole topic, so don't know whats been going on

    EDIT -
Nevermind, just read post all the way through. You won't have the drivers because the hard drive has been replaced. You'll need either original installation CD or the name of the network adapter.

Right click adapter, details and make a note of the VEN + DEV information. Search it on pcidatabase.com then you have the network card manufacturer you need the drivers from.

What is the make and model of your laptop - the drivers should be easy enough to find

OK, so this is what you/we need to resolve. At least we have established the correct and suspect NIC;) Yes, can you provide the name of the Ethernet card? Punch the description into Google for drivers. Let us know nikki.

HTH (will mark thread as 'read' - up to this point  )
