    OK try Start, Run, type cmd followed by OK

    Type the following lines in the black window followed by Return:

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /flushdns

    Ok, done that. The first two said, 'the operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissable for this operation'. The final one said, 'successfully flushed the DNS resolver cache'.

    I thought that you said that it was showing as connected? System Properties, Hardware, Device Manager, Network Adaptors, Highlight Ethernet adaptor, Right click Properties - what is the device status? Any exclamation marks?

    It states that the device is working properly, same with the wireless! The ethernet (1394 Net Adapter) shows as being connected, however when I go on the internet, it is not working. The wireless will connect for 3 seconds then disconnect.

    Sorry, as you can probably tell I am no good with the technical side of computers!!

    firewire = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:IEEE_1394_Firewire_PCI_Expansion_Card_Digon3.jpg

    Ethernet = http://support.morehouse.edu/whatis-network/ethernet-jack-on-computer.jpg

    at the moment, you are looking at the firewire connection (first pic), not the ethernet connection (second pic).

    the ethernet card in my machine is displayed as 'Nvidia Nforce 10/100/1000 mbps ethernet' in device manager. i think the most common ones are intel and realtek cards
