Ryanair cabin baggage depth

Just brought a new suitcase specifically for hand baggage on ryanair, read some reviews of it http://www.reevoo.com/p/arundel-small-trolley-cases#/reviews where multiple people state its ok for ryanair.

However on measuring it has a depth of 21cm depth one end and 17cm the other. The depth limit for ryanair is 20cm. So its definitely over, regardless of what the reviews say.

It does squash down with abit of force to 20cm but does ryanair use metal cages like easyjet?

Should i just not bother taking the risk and return it?

Ryanair use cages or their new measuring instrument is a sort of box which they fit over the suitcase. Interestingly enough we saw the box stored inside the cage at one airport. By my reckoning that means the box thingy must be smaller than the cage. (internal measurement of the box is used as a guage yet the external measurement fits in the cage, hope you understand) So if your case is measured go for the cage as opposed to the box.

Ryanair hand luggage size (55x40x20) is smaller than the standard (56x45x25) so the box thingy is to make a standard cage smaller for Ryanair

Actually it was a Ryanair cage, smothered with the Ryanair logo.

Having flown recently they appear to be more concerned with the weight than the size unless it is obviously oversized.

  • So by the sounds of it there's no margin for error...you're bags are either spot on or they're going in the hold?

Which is exactly as they say on the website.

    There's always one isn't there?

They used to say "Embassy" on the side of buses, but they didn't sell them

We regularly fly with Ryanair and have never had or seen hand luggage weighed by Ryanair, that has been security staff at Stansted. We have regularly seen them check the size, in fact we had a good laugh last time we flew home. A guy managed to get his, what appeared to be oversized case into the cage but struggled to get it out and was getting quite flustered dragging the cage along with him. He succeeded and was duly allowed to board. I was stopped because I hadn't put my handbag inside my holdall which was much smaller than his suitcase. I unzipped the holdall, put the bag on top and took it onboard. Once onboard I removed my handbag, zipped up the holdall and put the holdall in the overhead locker and my handbag by my feet. Makes a bit of a mockery of the one bag rule but there you go.

At Stansted by checkin staff on the way out and Sevilla by checkin staff on the way back. It was not just the odd bag but every bag. Staff at the boarding gate checked the size if they thought it was oversized.

You will struggle to find a bag or case that is the right dimensions to maximise what you can take on board - very annoying but here are a couple of suggestions. Firstly, I have found that the plasticised "bags for life" sold by Tesco, Morrisons etc can be really good to use on board. They weigh virtually nothing, and really maximise the space you can use, unlike most suitcases. You can tie the handles together to put it through the scanner if you want, and they're squashy as well to help them fit in the Ryanair measuring cage. As a woman, it is also extremely useful just to be able to pop your handbag in the top, rather than constantly having to take it in and out of your suitcase. You can also pop one in your suitcase if it's iffy as to whether it will fit, then you've got a back up if you don't want to pay to put your bag in the hold.

Secondly, you can get small vaccuum bags for travelling to reduce the size of your clothing - pop your stuff in and roll them up to get the air out of the one way valve, no vaccuum cleaner required. I've just bought some online at theshoelounge.

Hope this is of some help to somebody!
    Hope is not a strategy.
