  • Again, thank you for al your advice.

I have made a doctors app to get her hearing checked to rule that out.

I feel a lot better knowing im not the only one going through it and feel relieved hearing all the stories about kids who were the same but who are now great talkers.
    Gives me hope.

One word she says that makes me laugh is Balloon, she calls them "Hellabloon" and I don't know why?! Same with Aeroplane - It's "Hellaplane"

    Must be copying Helicopter....
Quite probably she is. She seems to have picked up 'hella' as meaning some sort of device which flies and is trying to apply it consistently. I doubt that she actually uses the 'hella' component with any bird or living thing which flies

MERFE - I had to chuckle at the "Globes" thing as my DD struggles with that word too, but she says it like "Glubs" and tomato is also "Ahmato" same with potato, that's "Ahtato" Though she can say sweets cake and cookies without issue :p

I think most young kids do this. I used to work with a child who, when he said rocket, it sounded very much like f--k it.

My brother did virtually nothing but smile and eat until he was four - my mum (a primary teacher) actually stopped taking him for his checkups and now admits she had accepted he was just a bit backwards. He could barely speak and what he did say was unintelligible, he didn't crawl or walk, she tried to teach him his letters and numbers and he giggled.

He is now the head of customer services at the posh central London office of an ever expanding international company. He was previously employed in Harrods and promoted three times in as many years, the last time leapfrogging his own boss! Not so backwards then. :rotfl:

Smiling, saying nothing and listening are the very best traits for customer service IMO

Just to add my personal experience (and admit it was ALL my fault :) ) My brother is three years younger than me, and I talked for him all the time. In the end no matter how much my mum tried to get my younger brother to talk, he just would not because he got used to me 'talking' for him. It was only me going to school that seemed to solve the problem after the speech therapist told my mum not to worry as 'he will get fed up of women speaking for him one day' LOL
:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:

Chocolate used to be a  word until recently, I'm sure you can imagine what it sounded like....

and no, she doesn't use Hella with anything but balloons and aeroplanes, she CAN say them properly if you get her to repeat it, but will always say Hellabloon first.

Maybe she heard someone shout "Oh hell!" when their kids balloon flew away :p:rotfl:
  • Hi,

I haven't had a chance to read all the replies, but just to say my son had very poor speech.

I wasn't overly concerned. I had a very bad pregnancy when he was in the run up to being three and I admit Peppa Pig dvd went on repeat while I rested in between each run to the loo for a good 20 weeks. He went to a preschool for 2 half days a week, but I definitely didn't spend as much time with him communicating and discussing to help bring on his speech (I don't think that is an issue for you).

What I wanted to reassure you on is that it does suddenly click with them.

My son didn't spend much time with the speech therapist, they noticed he was incredibly intune with what was happening and they didn't want him to get a hang up about it, so they gave me the homework and we did the different sounding techniques at home when we had the time.

The preschool teacher didn't help my PND keep on and on at me, I ended up with a huge hang up about it. He was progressing well, but slower in speech than the other children.

Then when he went to school, aged 4 and 4 months (roughly the same age your daughter will be when she starts) I expected a huge issue at school and braced myself for the special needs teacher. As it was the teacher said she could understand him ok, he had progressed really well but still very behind others. That she didn't feel the need of the special needs teacher, and he would get there.

After a year of school, he can now do every sound, and he is reading in the upper half of the class. I am so proud of him.

I think it took longer to get there because I had a hang up, after all the badgering of the preschool teacher. He came on so much with the class, phonics, and the teacher insisting he would get there. He did.

    Good luck
