Nationwide bank - positive?

I am utterly fed up with Abbey/Santander after 30 years, I'm changing. They are totally obbessed with inane security numbers for telephone/internet etc that are making my life impossible to get anything done. The latest one enforces you to link every internet transaction to a Uk mobile phone. I work abroad as a jouranlist 3 months of every year and use local SIMs, it's no use to me. What about Nationwide ? Positive feedback or not?

I like them, and they're great if you travel a lot due to the low charges (free within Europe, 1% outside) for using the cards abroad. I've used them as my main current account and credit card for about 5 years now, and they've been very good. They've made a few minor errors but on the whole I've been very satisfied with them.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
I've been a nationwide customer for years. On the whole they are good. The internet banking website is good. On line customer service is crap. Intrest rates,as with all,are crap...cheap loan rate at present for NW customers only.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

I've been a Nationwide customer for years and have mixed reviews.
They stated for 2 years they were going to implement faster payments but haven't on old current accounts at all. On new current accounts you only can receive them but not send them.
There is no interest on their current accounts at present. Mind you the interest on my other current accounts is poor also.
I have had no problems with their online customer service like with the other banks I'm with. In fact I've found them very good. However some of their branch staff leave a lot to be desired.
As clearly stated they are not a bank so if you expect to be able to deposit a lot of change then you will be disappointed. They are also quite picky at choosing customers so some people change their current account and can only get a cashcard not a full debit card. The reasoning is really random.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0 -
I've also had their current account and credit card for years now.
Love it. I travel a lot and it's cheap and easy - you just withdraw currency abroad with very good exchange rate and for cheap or no fees.
Online banking is easy to use and when I speak to them on the phone they are always very polite and very helpful. Even when my OH left my card in the branch (day before my holiday!!) and they for security reason refused to return it to him so I had to travel to pick it up, they were appologising all the way through the process - but I understand why I had to pick it up personally. Better safe then sorry I say.
I've heard so many shocking stories as how people were treated by their banks that I wouldn't change if they paid me for it (unless Nationwide turned into one of those nasty ones too).0 -
Any bank compared to Abbey is fantastic.scott_lithgows wrote: »Compared to Abbey they are fantastic.
No complaints about Nationwide myself, though they're my secondary current account. I use Lloyds for my primary.Conjugating the verb 'to be":
-o I am humble -o You are attention seeking -o She is Nadine Dorries0 -

At Nationwide you will need to use a card reader - a calculator-type thing that you put your card into, and enter your PIN. It'll then give you a unique code that you type into internet banking to authorise the transaction.
If you don't want this level of fuss when doing transactions, then Halifax, HSBC and Lloyds all don't use this technology.0
