Nationwide bank - positive?

Only good things to report about Nationwide. I have a joint current account, joint savings account and mortgage with them. Never had any problems or bad service at all.Squish0

About their banking - no comment
Actual service face to face - amazing! I've been with Nationwide since 1985, can't fault them.0 -
At Nationwide you will need to use a card reader - a calculator-type thing that you put your card into, and enter your PIN. It'll then give you a unique code that you type into internet banking to authorise the transaction.
If you don't want this level of fuss when doing transactions, then Halifax, HSBC and Lloyds all don't use this technology.
sounds ominous. Does this 'calculator' thing work abroad? Am I going to be stuck somewhere unable to shift dosh around online?0 -
Yes, it works anywhere. It is battery operated and doesn't need to connect to your computer. You pop the card in, enter your PIN, press a button then enter the code from the website. The reader then displays another code that you enter into the website.sounds ominous. Does this 'calculator' thing work abroad? Am I going to be stuck somewhere unable to shift dosh around online?0 -

Just don't forget to take it! If you leave it at home, then you're stuck.
But if you are working abroad a lot, then Nationwide is probably best, as their charges for using your card abroad are small, or, in Europe, zero.0 -

I have had one for around 2 years now, I have never needed to use mine, it is only required for transactions to external accounts, you can move money within Nationwide Accounts without using it.0 -
Rather depends what you want from your "bank".
No doubt that Nationwide service has deteriorated in the last few years.
I have been with them for years but now operate it as a secondary account.
Moved to A&L when they dropped all the interest rates.
The website used to be good but now you need one of those dam card readers if you want to perform any sort of transaction.
Which means you need to carry it around if you use the internet from anywhere other than your "home" computer. They claim its a fraud counter measure but its does not make operating your account on the internet easier.
So if youare after cheap ATM withdrawals abroad its OK but if you want your money to earn money look else where!0 -
I'd say Nationwide are a bit of a mixed bag to be honest. Then again I've been fortunate enough not to even have many problems with Abbey- their codes are just as heavy as some of the other sites- hate the ones with a mix of capitals! I can see how the transaction on mobiles are annoying I think it was very much the same as Nationwide/RBS- you only need the card reader or indeed your mobile in Abbey's case for setting up new payments, you can still make exisiting? Barclays of course require you to have the card reader to log in.0

I do loads of internet banking with Nationwide and I have NEVER had to use a car reader. I have one i can use but it had never asked. I've sent money, set up new standing orders, cancelled direct debits and paid bills without needing one. The last lot i only did 5 minutes ago. No problems whatsoever with me. I DID have a few problems getting money from a few cashpoints in Dublin of all places, but Nationwide claim it wasn't their fault. I did succeed on one occasion, but that was after I'd had to get iy out on a credit card. :-(0
