    Hi

    Thanks for your replies.

I'm not on the pill anymore. I was but my previous GP changed me onto cezeratte because of a family history of DVT (I haven't had it though). The first month I took it I bled 3 times in the 4 weeks, for about 5 days each time. I went to a different GP at my new practice but my notes hadn't come through so was told to come back in 3 weeks because they can't do anything without notes. I stopped taking it because the bleeding continued.
When I went to the GP today I mentioned this and he just prescribed more saying i'd have to get used to it or get the injection, but didn't actually give me the choice.

The only medication I am on now is inhalers for my asthma but I've always been on them.

When I took the b12 I did feel better with more energy and certainly not as upset all the time, but I don't know if this was just my head telling me I was better because I had medication.

I am getting my bloods tested on Friday so I think I'll wait for my results then see another GP.

I hope you all don't think I'm an attention seeking hypercondriac (sp!!) I only go to the doctors when I absolutely have to so I know the symptoms must be bad for me to be concerned. In 2008 I had a kidney infection but ignored it because I didn't want to waste a GPs time. I was eventually rushed to a and e and in hospital for a week.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find the way myself.

I have been feeling tired too lately and putting on weight even though I have been cutting down on portion sizes. I had put it down to the menopause but perhaps I should have my thyroid checked.

I would agree with the other posters though who say you should see another GP at the practice or even change practice if necessary. No doctor should speak to you that way and I would even put in a complaint.

Depending on how long you have been there he should have your old notes and if there is a blood test showing B12 deficiency that should be in your notes.

Hi boltonangel. I am sorry to hear that you have been having such problems. I have B12 deficiency and it causes me many of the problems that you have described. You can have B12 deficiency without having Pernicious Anaemia but have a look at http://www.pernicious-anaemia-society.org/phpbb/ for more information - there are lots of people who need more frequent injections. They will be able to offer you support and advice. Feel free to PM me if you need more info,

Hello Boltonangel. There is a uk thyroid forum. Sorry I can't do links but if you google Thyroid uk forum you should find it. The forum is full of useful information.

  • I went to the gp's and was told my thyroid was fine.
Some years later I went to see an endocrinologist privately and he did several thyroid blood tests which are not done by drs under the NHS policies, I was diagnosed with under active thyroid and put on 2 types of medication for it, Liothyronine and Thyroxine.
    Push for a referral.

    Hi

The title is a little confusing but I didn't know what to write.

In Sept 09 I went to my old GP (we've moved areas) complaining with constantly feeling tired and gaining weight. She thought that I may have an underactive thyroid because my neck was 'full' looking so sent bloods off to be tested.
They came back saying that I didn't have a thyroid problem but did have a b12 deficiency.

I was then prescribed b12 injections every 3 months. I went for the 1st month.

Felling constantly tired again I went to visit my new GP and asked if I could have another injection (I already have the actual vial of b12) but he said that I couldn't possibly have b12 aneamia as I am not thin enough.
I mentioned that whatever I do I constantly keep gaining weight, for example this week I have started slimming world and stuck to it because the only person who suffers if I don't is me and have gained 4 pounds in less than a week!
I did slimming world in 2008 and lost 3 stones so I know it works.

The GP said that I need to cut to 1000 calories a day and that I should stop making excuses for my weight gain but that he would arrange for more blood tests just to prove I don't have b12 deficiency.

I am so upset. I got out of the surgery and burst into tears in the car park in front of my 2 year old and haven't stopped since.
I just don't know what to do. I have tried everything and nothing is working anymore. I feel so down all the time and have started to stop going out unless it's absolutely necessary.

    I am 5ft 4 and now weigh 11st despite weighing 10st 11 on weds.

So your new GP is saying that the test results were wrong but he is right?

Immediate cause for concern to me.

To arrange tests for the purpose of proving you, your previous GP and the test results are wrong is (IMHO) arrogant.

His comments about making excuses for your weight gain are appalling, insensitive and unsupportive.

No wonder you burst into tears.

Has he actually scheduled the test?
If so, I'd be inclined to wait for the results to come through.
If not, I'd go back to your surgery and request to see a different doctor, if that is at all possible.
I don't know how other surgeries work, but we are registered with a particular GP but can see any of the doctors there.

    Good luck

I lost a lot of weight with my B12 deficiency (mine was ridiculously low before it was discovered and shut down my bone marrow) but since I've started on the B12 supplements I've put on a fair amount of weight, probably close to 2 stone in 18 months since diagnosis)

A lot of GPs don't take B12 problems seriously (because heaven forbid you be under pensionable age and have B12 issues), I did have one say about potentially stopping my injections - I just looked and they said 'maybe not then', if it's been written that you have a B12 deficiency they shouldn't really stop them. My levels are still now in normal range (so further blood tests once you are on B12 won't shut diddly squat) just before my injection BUT I still feel tired then as the levels my body is now used to is so much higher (over 2,000 just after injection to 300) and usually after them I am good for about 8 weeks then run down (except this month had my injection on Friday and feel worse than ever)

The website Jelly mentioned is good one (must go back on there actually), I've found it easier to take the GPs out of it, (they just prescribe for me now) but if you find one who is understanding then stick with them, you may need them more often, I found 13 weeks too far and coped better on 12 weeks

I would definately make an app to see a different Dr. After weeks of pain with a water infection I eventually went to see mine (though never made it - we get sent to nurses first and only of they can't deal with it then you get to see a Dr - I've never managed to see the Dr yet!) as I was in lots of back pain & about to go on holiday.
The nurse took my temp & told me I didn't have an infection (because it had passed but was still getting the pain) and I literally had to refuse to leave until they gave me something (which in the end they did). I would go again and again and again until you get something sorted out!

    Hi

    Thanks again for your replies.

I feel like such a failure that I can't even control my own weight and he has just made me feel even worse. I am still crying and now have a headache too! :)
I have a job interview tomorrow and I really don't think I've got the confidence to 'sell' myself. I really feel like I'm hitting a brick wall with this.

I have PCOS and it took alot of persuading for my doctor to send me for a scan, i was 21 and so upset at the changes in my body etc that she was adamant i couldn't possibly have it as i looked 'normal' and was not overweight, after the scan it was confirmed i do after all have PCOS and the doc was so apologetic,
so it just shows they can be wrong.

    Please see a different doctor.
